New White House turns up more Bush Gaurd records
[link|http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=615&ncid=696&e=3&u=/nm/20040930/pl_nm/campaign_bush_guard_dc|Yahoo News]
President Bush, accused by Democrats of shirking his duty in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, wrote that he had "inadequate time" to meet future Reserve commitments in his Nov. 1974 letter of resignation released on Wednesday.\t

The letter was released by the White House on the eve of the first presidential debate, in Miami on Thursday, between Bush and his Democratic challenger, John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran.

Even Reuters noticed that the White House was trying to let this out when nobody would notice.

The letter of resignation, signed by Bush, was sent from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and addressed to the Colorado unit.

The White House said Bush sent the letter after having already been honorably discharged from the Texas Air National Guard.

Nothing major, but the letter of resignation was dated after the time that Bush has claimed to have been discharged. I'm pretty sure that this is the reverse of the normal process, indicating that Bush got yet another favor. If the favor was Bush being allowed to write the resignation letter after having left the gaurd, it's a small one. But if his discharge was back dated to cover for missing time then it's much more ugly.

New Good Grief.
When do you guys get to hear about *policies*?

I thought the UK press was petty, guttersnipy and all-around obsessed with silly shit that doesn't matter, but this is taking the cake.

From where I'm sitting, I don't much care what GWB did/did not do in the 70s. I'm very much interested in what he's going to do to your (and therefore my) economy. I'm very interested in where he's going to drag Tony next for a game of soldiers.

Sigh.

New Never
American press and news don't cover the issues, because they claim it's too boring. A lot of people, myself included, think it has a lot more to do with real reporting being hard.

Studing complex policies and breaking them down so they can be understoon in short news segments is hard work at best, and in many cases the policies are intentionally written to be confusing or obscure. Combine this with the fact that news agencies have been improving profits by cutting the number of fact checkers and investigators they have.

The end result is that much of the time they can't do much more then report campaign press releases as if they where news, and comment on who looks better.

As for how many Americans care about Bush's historical gaurd actions, it's hard to say. Most people I've talked to are smart enough to make the connection between Bush using his family connections to get out of service, and his willingness to throw soldiers lives away today. But at the same time they have been worn down by how long this story has been dragged out without finding a smoking gun.

New Seconded
Journalism as an intellectual discipline has fallen to the level of PE. It attracts showy idiots with lots of bluster and no patience.

I point out with extreme glee that the decline of a once-noble profession began with the injection of bubble-headed bleached-blonde women into reporting for the purpose of jacking up ratings.

New Bullbyproducts.
Journalism has been in disrepute since the first journalist invented the profession because he couldn't find honest work.

New Remember the Maine?
New s/he/she/
I think that journalism traces back to people gossiping, and given our current knowledge of hunting-gathering cultures, women were more involved in that than men.

New There's lots of news about policies. (30kB .jpg)
John Kerry, for instance, is for bright orange tans:

:-/

Of course, the [link|http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-4523817,00.html|Guardian] is covering the "story" too.

Jay's right about the US press. If people want to get news about the issues, they've got to do their own digging.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Well, he's got the oompa-loompa vote.
It's a shame the mainstream media have to focus on the superficialities of a presidential candidate. But hey, he's a superficial candidate.

You want more in depth background investigation of Kerry? It's the Swift Boat Veterans or this. Take your pick. The man's only got two levels to him: the ludicrous surface and the filthy undercoating. Core of his character? He hasn't got one. He's a Clintonista, a hollow man. Head full of straw, alas.

A new paint job isn't gonna fix what's wrong with this guy.

I will not rate.
Lucy Ramirez please pick up the white courtesy phone.
Kerry is a liar and he doesn't tolerate fights from others.

New And what IS wrong with him?
Or Bush, for that matter.

Do try and keep to current policy matters.

Banging the old "liar liar" drum is boring. They're politicians - of COURSE they're liars. Question is, are they liars who can manage the public purse and the public sword?

Enough on this issue.

Nobody really cares, we've all pretty much got the gist.

Air Force Reserve officials here, as well as staffers at the White House, were struggling to explain the sudden appearance of a 1974 document in which George W. Bush submitted his resignation from the Reserve, saying he had "inadequate time" to fulfill his duty obligations.

The military is saying the recently released file didn't come from them, they have no idea where it came from. The White House is saying that the military just handed it over.

Have whatever values you have. That's what America is for.
You don't need George Bush for that.
