New AKA "injury time"
Time during the game that a US referee would normally "stop the clock" only they don't do that for real football. Instead, the ref gets to hold the end of the game up as long as he likes and call it "extra time" :-)

New Incorrectomundo.
If a game must produce a result - i.e. it's a cup final, or something - then if the scores are level at the end of normal time (90 minutes) including any stoppage (injury) time played, then an extra 30 minutes (15 minutes each way) is played.

This is Extra Time.

For games that really really must produce a result, like the World Cup Final, after this it can go to penalties or the Golden Goal.

New Right.
I misunderstood...having not watched the US Women take the gold...thought that he might have meant injury time.

Now that I've actually read the news (and your post) I defer to your answer...the correct one.

I hate games decided by penalty kicks. It just seems so...wrong.

New Agreed on penalty shootouts.
Great for TV. Crap for the game.

Golden Goal is so much better.
