Cisco vpn module won't load under Linux 2.6 kernel
I had the Cisco vpn client working under a 2.4 kernel. Just installed a 2.6 kernel and rebuilt the Cisco module against the new kernel. Now when I try to start it I get: $ sudo /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init start
Starting /usr/local/bin/vpnclient: insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.6-1-686/CiscoVPN/cisco_ipsec': -1 Invalid module format
Failed (insmod) DId I build the module wrong? Or does this need to be loaded at boot time? ===

No, you didn't do it wrong
There are lots of places supposedly offering help on how to do this on the intarweb. I've tried at least 3 of 'em, including deb-help-gfolkert. None of them have produced a working cisco-ipsec module for my 2.6.5 kernel. So when I work from home (and hence need my VPN connection), I make sure to boot into my 2.4 kernel.

Looks like I can use vmware or the vpn. Ooh, may be I can install the Windows vpn client under XP under vmware. Oh that would be sick.

No,
You can install a newer kernel from the 2.4.x series and then install the headers... then compile against that for both the cisco stuff and the vmware stuff. Wow, whoda thunk it. Talk about scary though try installing a new kernel (2.6.6) and switching from LILO to grub, at the same time. apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.6-1-686 grub;grub-install /dev/hda;update-grub;shutdown -r now Now how is THAT for a comamnd line. --

New cisco client available as of 5/23
Our network guy just told me he's got it running on a 2.6 kernel at home now. Will be trying tonight.
