this would be funny if it wasnt so pathetic Oz sword control
[link|http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38896|http://www.worldnetd...?ARTICLE_ID=38896] According to a report in the Melbourne Herald Sun, the new statute slaps owners of swords who don't have a permit with up to six months in jail and fines of up to $12,000. you would think that they would just ban assault swords, or limit the amount of swords you could carry. Or get a fucking clue. "Thats not a sword ossifer, thats a broadax so piss off." thanx, bill

While in Florida, I looked longingly at a stiletto
concealed as stack/walking stick *. The shop owner informed me that I need a concealed weapon permit to purchace this beauty.
* always wanted to have something like that, but A) I am not old enough to look credible with a walking stick and B) it was over my price range ( $20 :( )

Owning isn't the problem...
but carrying it in public is. Technically, it would be a weapon (blade length over 4") and it would be concealed.
Not that getting a concealed weapons permit in Florida is hard. You can get a concealed firearm permit in (iirc) a 45 minute class. I can't imagine a concealed weapon's permit to be any harder than that.
The bad news of Oz's weapons ban is for martial arts performing Tamigiri (test cutting). Live samuri blades aren't cheap to begin with (minimum $200 us, with prices climbing fast into the thousands for custom blades). Now those people are going to have to get permits, etc. just to keep their blades.

Oz problem has been 2 many samurai wannabees ...
Romping down main streets of Melbourne threatening people.
For some bizzare reason Melbourne (Rand take note!) is the samurai warrior wannabe capital of the world. On a per-capita basis more Melburnians fancy they can dress in asian style pantaloons take a katana and walk the streets in a drug (or some other) induced frenzy, waving the sword & doing so until Melbourn's notorious trigger-happy cops, shoot them.
Cheers Doug M

outlaw stupid gits, not swords
Swords arnt outlawed here but if I carried a broadsword into a grocery store I would have a nice deputy asking my intentions, if he didnt like the answer or I was threatening the nice deputy would blow me into kingdom come and all is well with the world. If I said I was on my way to the largo fair he would assist in carrying the beer to the car. Outlawing swords is an asinine thing to do. thanx, bill

I thought I told this story before ...
but it doesn't seem to show up in Site Search.
When I was 5 or so in kindergarten I took my father's Navy dress sword to show-and-tell. It wasn't sharp, but pointy and was definitely a sword. The teacher seemed a little surprised, IIRC, but it was no big deal.
I'd hate to think how an act like that would be regarded today...
I would like to whole-heartedly agree with you, but the "yes, but" side of me keeps thinking of exceptions. There aren't enough police to keep a lookout for all the idiots out there. Some things shouldn't be carried around in public.
"Hi officer, I carry these nunchaku and this battle axe with me because I like to do exercises while I'm waiting for my morning train. I have no idea why everyone ran screaming from the platform..."
Cheers, Scott.

well around here someone with concealed carry permit
would show why private ownership of guns is a good deterrent. Cops can only investigate after the fact. Its up to the individual to secure their safety. thanx, bill

A potentially effected view
Being a participant in historical European Martial Arts I have heard much discussion about the legislation. Admittedly none was in favour. It has been mentioned that there was a slight variation on the law that specified whether the blade was sharp or blunt. If it was blunt as used by most re-enactors or recreators then it was exempt. However, if it had an edge then it was classified as offensive. I have yet to meet anybody who studies historical fencing that would be likely to go on a rampage with a blade. I agree that the law is silly. However, it is also ridiculous that any idiot can by a sharpened blade from a sports store like 'Planet Max'. It is worth noting that as a serious weapon most of the blades from the sports suppliers wouldn't last more than a couple of blows in a bout with another weapon whether of the same quality or 'combat ready'. By the way you can't swash-buckle with just a sword. You need a buckler (small rounded shield) on hand as well. The phrase originates from the 16th century where gangs of youths (much like todays trouble makers :-) ) would roam the streets 'swashing' swords against bucklers to announce their presence and challenge for a fight.

Some say size is not important.
Sure a sharpened edge is low tech, however, there are some even more basic options that don't require much tech. Someone who was serious about killing someone would in fact consider options other than a sword. A sword is too cumbersome for most people, rather hard to conceal on ones body, a bit expensive to be used disposably, and is not quite the 'ultimate' weapon it is perceived to be. According to a copper I've spoken to the commonest impaling device is actually a screwdriver. It doesn't require much in the way of sharpening. Just having a wedge and a stiff shaft is all that's needed to penetrate. A fine edge is more essential for cutting blades like for example a kitchen knife. In terms of effective melee weapons one can come out quite well with stiff shaft like perhaps a walking stick or a pvc pipe. So yes I agree the intent of the legislation is an over reaction to the perceived threat of swords being on the streets. Following the concern of the legislation they might have to ban walking sticks from all those geriatric gangsters and watch out for those gangs of home-improvement hooligans...:-)
