question for the aussies
There's a very slight possibility the SO and I might visit Australia this year, the destination cities being either Melbourne, Sydney or both. Would anyone care to provide thumbnail impressions of each metropolis, or to pitch one over the other as a target?

Yeah, I'll go along with that :-)
Melbourne is apparently better for shopping. And trams. Sydney - better for everything else :)
Yes, I live in Sydney, so I'm biased. But I do like Melbourne, I don't go there nearly often enough.
Oh and of course Sydney has me buying you a beer :)

3 days?
Maybe if it were paved highway all the way. As it stands, it's probably cheaper to fly there, rather than hire a 4wd & Satellite phone & radio safetry beacon etc, and buy provisions/accomodation to last the drive there and back.
By all accounts though, once you get there, the view is magnificent.

View for most of the trip is ...
hypnotic & crash inducing & painful for people not used to it. We always advise visiting friends to fly & live
Cheers

Uluru
Great place to visit. Went there many years ago as a kid. Was amongst the last few able to camp at the rock itself. Check out the following picture for the rock being rained on. Doesn't happen too often. [link|http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,1658,349348,00.jpg|http://www.theaustra...658,349348,00.jpg]

This will be easy ( we have no Melburnians in IWETHEY)
Sydney !
1) Beautiful setting 2) Good company 3) Delightful sunny sandy beaches 4) Good beer & company 5) Easy to get to the Blue Mountains 6) Good food, beer & company 7) Great Sydney harbour cruises 8) Good sightseeing, food, beer & company
If you come here, am sure we can provide some chaufer driven tours & take you to some out of the way top-notch eating & drinking establishments. Could probably put you up for a week (but you would need to hire a car - Sydney public transport other than harbour cruises, is lousey).
Could be a great opportunity for an Aussie IWETHEYS dinner out (eh youse others living eer - wothcher rekon mates ?)
As for Melbourne
1) The food is also good 2) The public transport is great 3) The beaches are non-existant 4) Tha harbour can't be seen very well (thank god) 4) The good company won't be there (No IWETHEYers) 5) The rain is clean and persistent and pervasive 6) The sightseeing is minimal (and further reduced by the rain)
Cheers
Doug

We'd probably have to book now for Tetsuya's :)
But yes, sounds like a good plan!
Well that's it Rand, we've decided. You're coming to Sydney, and going out to dinner with us. Now we'll start work on the rest of your itinerary... :-)
