New Near record rainfall
[link|http://www.cnn.com/2004/WEATHER/05/24/spring.storms.ap/index.html|http://www.cnn.com/2...rms.ap/index.html]

7.98 inches so far this May. The record is 8.05 inches from 1943. Since there will be more storms today and still 7 days to go in the month, I think it's safe to say we'll break the record.

New Ditto here in Minnesota. From drought to flood conditions
New NE Illinois, too
Our favorite area rivers, the Fox and Des Plaines, both already above flood (the Des Plaines was 5ft 4in above flood stage already, and won't crest until tomorrow...unless, of course more rain falls, which is in the forcast for tonight).

Can you say "steady drip...drip...drip...?" I knew you could...

New Nothing in Naperville
But then, my house was dry as a bone during the Great Naperville Flood of '96 or '97 (I was still in Texas for both of those years.) I'm less than a mile as the crow files from the West Branch of the DuPage River, and about 2 miles from the East Branch (I'm between 'em). I drive over the West Branch daily. Nothing noticeable there. And driving over the Fox River in Elgin this morning (along Route 20) I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary either. I'll keep an eye out on my homeward-bound commute tonight, though.

New The Fox isn't as bad
as the Des Plaines, but I heard that all boating has been suspended on the Chain Of Lakes (one of the Fox's headwaters), until the runoff settles.

Besides, the Fox has a better network of locks and dams than does the Des Plaines; they can hold quite a lot of water in the Chain and release it under control.

The Des Plaines is to crest in Gurnee today; about 7 inches above its previous record crest in the '86 flood. They'll see the crest in Des Plaines itself tomorrow sometime.

New Wish you could send half of that water down here.
[link|http://www.usatoday.com/weather/wmth5.htm|"Southeast parched in late May"].
By late May, the Southeast could have used some of the rain that wouldn't stop falling on the Midwest. From March 1 to May 24, less than half of the normal amount of rain had fallen on many places in South Carolina, Georgia and parts of North Carolina, Alabama and the Florida peninsula. The pattern of heavy rain across the Midwest and dryness in the Southeast was similar to the weather pattern that brought the 1993 floods to the Midwest.

New We'll take some too :)
Last I heard, I think Sydney's water reserves are just over 50% capacity. [link|http://www.sydneywater.com.au/html/news_media/media_view.cfm?id=224|50.2 % to be exact]. (I reckon the dams are half full, but other people say they're half empty... :)

Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
