Jury duty...
... for my wife this time, who is responsible for home schooling our 10 year old and will still be breast feeding the baby at the time of duty. Children aren't allowed at jury duty. This could be ugly.

Wouldn't breast-feeding be grounds for exemption?

Most men (some women) wouldn't be Jurors...
If that were true...
Of course John you probably couldn't claim that... Unless you found yourself a someone in need of a "Manzier" or The "Bro"

Alright, smart-
arse! :)
Permit me, then, to expand my hypothesis beyond that which is normally allowed in the limited space of a subject line...
One would think that a mother who is still breast-feeding a baby would be exempt from jury duty. This would be due to the need for the baby to be regularly fed, and the difficulty in sorting out the logistics of expressing, storing, transporting, etc. OK, hope that's clear enough now ;)
As for your other comment, you (probably) won't catch me hanging around no skanky man-boob man, man! :)

Try my friend's trick.
He was called up for Jury duty, and turned up on the day wearing a Dr. Evil "I make the decisions here! I demand a little respect!" T-shirt. Funnily enough, he wasn't picked for the jury :)

Re: You'd think so, wouldn't you.
As a matter of fact my wife was called to jury duty when she was breastfeeding our youngest. She went to the court office and brought the birth certificate and a letter from our pedeatrician who certified she still breastfeeding the baby. It was sufficient to postpone the duty till next 2 years.

My boss tried that
Rather than refuse to serve, she requested "accomodations". Got her dismissed in a hurry.

Did she request specific accomodations?
Or just in general?
The thing is, my wife doesn't mind serving as long as they let her keep the baby with.

OK, just talked to her...
She first spoke to a "deputy comissioner of the jurors". She was told that there is no specific provision for nursing, but she should ask to speak to the judge before answering the selection questions.
She told the judge that she is happy to serve, but she has a "logistical issue": she needs to be allowed to pump periodically (My boss was working at the time, so breastfeeding as such was not an issue - it was all done through a pump. If your wife is nursing, her conversation will be different). At that point the judge excused her.

Easy to say.
1) Pumps don't work for my wife this time around. Why? Dunno. They didn't work all that well the first time, either. 2) My first one absolutely refused a bottle, and I have no reason to believe this one would be any different. 3) Given 1 and 2, what the hell am I supposed to do?

pumps can be dificult but as for baby refusing
that is a short term refusal, having had to bottle feed breast milk to a baby more than once myself. Soy baby milk is a good once in a while substitute. thanx, bill

Re: pumps can be dificult but as for baby refusing
The bottle is a moot point if she doesn't let down for a pump.
Soy baby milk ain't gonna happen for multiple reasons.

short term refusal
you haven't met my son. He refused to accept any kind of artificial nipple. It had to be the real thing or nothing. We tried breast milk and several other kinds of milk to no effect. I can't speak to the situation here, but I do know that some babies can be very obstinate...

What's the problem?
I understood one of the classic exemptions from Jury duty was related to being "irreplaceable" at place of business. (usually used by upper level executives)
You surely can't produce milk. The court surely won't allow a baby in the jury box. Raising a child surely is a job. 'nuff said.
Have her refuse the 'invitation to exercise her right as a citizen' with the excuse of 'nursing mother'. I'll bet there's a spot on the form for it.
(And if there isn't, there should be)
