New As predicted below - shit has hit fan in Aust press

Front page coverage today of US interrogators killing detainees. The actual details have already been mentioned here in this forum but it seems there is also more to come. **The issue now is that it has become front page news**.

I am of the opinion that the original pushing of the 'humiliation' photos was a deliberate tactic to soften the blow regarding deaths in custody and how some of hese murders were carried out. The details are very ugly. US officials knew of the photos at end 2003.

New Tonight's TV news in Aust - more photos appear on net

"scandal is growing". They showed a few of the new ones & they look as bad as the worst of the first.

Wonder if Bush can avoid the fallout ?

New If push comes to shove -- Rummy's canned, Shrub's sorry
New I noticed Bush used the old 'Nobody told me' line
Funny, our Prime Minister has been relying on that old chestnut for ages. Maybe Bush is finally copying Howard, it's usually the other way around...
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Heard on the radio this morning
that the Red Cross has known about the torture and killings in Iraq for months. How come everybody except Congress and the citizens of the USA knew about this?

New You did know
People have mentioned allegations of abuse many times over the course of the last couple of years (at Guantanamo, Afghanistan, etc). Did you see that pic of the American Taliban guy (Lindh, IIRC) that was posted on the net a while back? This was discussed back in 2002:

The photo shown on the CBS website is edited; here's another one with a little political commentary on it from Rumsfeld. Considering that the comments were made well after this photo was taken, and that Rumsfeld must have been well aware of the existence of this photo (reported on CBS in 2002, remember?), it pretty much says it all:

If they're going to do this to one of you, what do you think they're going to be willing to do to the (quote-unquote) "towel-heads"?

I found this on

[link|http://prorev.com/torture.htm|http://prorev.com/torture.htm]

which also has the mitrione story, among others.

I can't help but notice when I was looking for the photo that most news outlets didn't publish it, or published a version with the "naughty bits" edited out (as in, only showing the top half of the photo). Perhaps if your media was a little less squeamish about offending the sensibilities of your people, the people would have a better idea of the sorts of things that have been being done in their name.

In conclusion, Congress and the American People did know about it. The problem was that nobody was paying attention: none so blind and all that.
