New American are shrinking
[link|http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1185457,00.html|Guardian UK]
Researchers have made a startling discovery: Americans are shrinking. A nation once famed for its strapping, well-nourished youth is gradually diminishing in physical stature.

By contrast, the heights of men and women from Europe are increasing inexorably. The average Dutchman, whose country produces the Continent's loftiest men, is now more than six feet tall - almost two inches above his American counterpart. And he is still growing. Across the Netherlands hotel owners are lengthening beds and raising door mantles to stop the nation's tall youth suffering from irreparable anatomical damage.

Actually, it appears that height in the US reached a limit around 1850. At the time the average European was shorter, but they have continued to grow and are now somewhat taller.

The reasons are rather complex, but mostly attributable to health and diet.

New a lot is due to nutrition and rationing
during the hundred year war due to blockades and demand the brits and french lost lost about 4 inches in average height. Dunno about Americans shrinking, all my gets are taller and heavier than their peers by about a half head. My gentle Giant is the tallest and heaviest player on his under 6th grade (12 and under group) he is 9 in the 3rd grade. Football coaches keep going "I want."

New My offspring too
I got a local PeeWee Football team waiting for him to turn 7 so they can recuit him. He is only 5 and is 4 foot 2, and 90 pounds. Very strong too, can lift up other 5-year-olds like a rag doll. I am trying to teach him not to do that and to watch his strength around other kids.

Taller and heavier than I was at his age. If it continues he will be 6 feet by age 12.

New Statistics again . . .
Are we sure this decrease in hight of the "average" American isn't caused by the high and constant flow of immigrants from Asia, Mexico and other areas with shorter average populations?

New I read the article
it was in this week's New Yorker. They controlled for that. What the main researcher is attempting to do is to find out if there's some enclave of rich tall people, but he hasn't found it yet.

According to the article, there are three main growth spurts in a person's life; infancy, childhood, and adolescence. If there are bad circumstances in any one of those periods, it can have a major effect on the final height of the person. He's wondering if the kind of diet that most people in NA have is having an effect (pop, chips, hamburgers, etc). That is, people are getting stunted in their childhood and adolescent growth spurts by the kind of diet they have, not by the lack of diet.

the only difference I see is substituting corn syrop for the extract of the sugar cane plant. Now I am biased because I am allergic to bourbon but we need to research what high fructose corn syrop does to the system vs sugar cane extract. The rise in stupidity violence and obesity matxhes the /s/cornsyrop/sugar

New I noticed that possible correlation too; it's about Corp $$
Surprise.
New allergic to bourbon?
What in there specifically are you allergic to? Corn?

New Not allergic to corn but bourbon has a strange effect
and have broken out in hives a couple of times. It also puts me in a zero tolerance mode, not good considering the places I used to imbibe bourbon in. All other liquors have the normal relaxed fun effect, its bourbon specifically that hits me wrong.
thanx,

There are perhaps no more tragic creatures than middle-aged, middle-class tourists, unused to traveling in unfamiliar places, on a lifetime dream vacation.
