Give it 3 to three and a half hours for the drive. Rock Island/Moline is a nice area. If you visit your friend, be sure to have them take you to Galena. When'll you be in the area? I-57 is a free shot into Chicago from the south; I-294 is that evil toll-road, and I-94 north is a) one of the ugliest roads know to man, and b) still requires some time on I-294. I was thinking US 20 out to Rockford, some semblance of I-39 south, picking up something going further West. Or perhaps US 20 out to Galena, then 84 (or is it 82?) south. Either way, they're local roads. But still.
