It's a reasonably straight shot.
Interstate highways the whole way from O'Hare. 294 south to 88 west. That's it.
Give it 3 to three and a half hours for the drive. Rock Island/Moline is a nice area. If you visit your friend, be sure to have them take you to Galena.
When'll you be in the area? You'll be driving through my hometown on your way out 88...

Re: It's a reasonably straight shot.
If it comes off would like to drop by - still very much in the planning at this stage & if happens will coincide ith Oshkosh fly-in. After Moline turn north awhile & then back to coast to Fond Du Lac.
Cheers Doug

Re: It's a reasonably straight shot.
But that route is all toll roads, "managed" (if you can call it that) by the most corrupt toll road group known to mankind!
But do signal when/if you come by the Chi area. (the letter jay, followed by the letter bee, followed by the number four, at burnsgroup punkt com...)

Yep, it is all toll roads.
And if he doesn't want to take the toll roads, he can spend 4 and a half to 5 hours making the same trip.
Pick your poison...

Well, I-80's free
and lets you off at the southernmost end of the Chicagoland Area. I-57 is a free shot into Chicago from the south; I-294 is that evil toll-road, and I-94 north is a) one of the ugliest roads know to man, and b) still requires some time on I-294.
Depending on his target, I don't see how that costs him another 1-1.5 hrs...

Re: Well, I-80's free
Well, given my current position, and where I drive to, I-80 is not normally in the set of roads I drive. I was thinking US 20 out to Rockford, some semblance of I-39 south, picking up something going further West. Or perhaps US 20 out to Galena, then 84 (or is it 82?) south. Either way, they're local roads.
But still. Pay the stinkin' tolls and get there as fast as humanly possible (90-100 mph the whole way.)

Ahh, the Quad Cities.
Moline, Rock Island, Davenport and Bettendorf. Err... and East Moline. I guess the "Quint Cities" just doesn't sound right.
Anyway, if you get the chance, you may wan't to consider visiting the Davenport [link|http://www.art-dma.org/permanent.htm|Museum of Art]. I was lucky enough on my one visit to catch their showing of an expanded collection of Grant Wood (American Gothic is his most famous) paintings. While that show is over, they still have what I considered an impressive collection of works for a small venue and their permanent collection does include several works by home town boy Grant.
Depending on if/when you make it there, you may also be able to catch very nice Jazz festival. The [link|http://www.bixsociety.org/|Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival] (Bix is another home town boy) tends to focus on Roaring Twenties style big band jazz. July 22 thru 25.
