Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I think they hurt themselves much more than us.
They thought the US would just take it and almost do nothing as we did on previous occasions, or leave the middle east (as we left Lebanon and Somalia). They didn't expect that Afghanistan would be invaded.

I don't think bin Laden cares about domestic US politics or the US economy. He views the battle as between the US and Islam, as he expressed it in his screed broadcast on [link|http://www.megastories.com/attack/binladen/video011007.shtml|October 7].

The US has a larger presence in the Middle East than we did before the attack. I don't think the attack on the US on 9/11/2001 furthered their aims.

My $0.02.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Disagree
Remember that these are the same people who fought the USSR occupation of Afganistan for years.

A bigger US presence in the Middle East just means more convenient targets. And inevitably means more outraged Muslims. It's a war of attrition that has barely begun.

Already the Iraq war is a political issue. There is talk (admittedly not that much in the open yet) in the USA of bringing back the draft. And I have to wonder how long the current state of affairs is sustaintable.

Cheers,
Ben

New they want us to do exactly as we have done
the jackboot of the government on the neck of the population until ordinary people revolt. Classic theory and they have gotten farther with 911 than any other attack. Even the federal building bombing didnt get as tough a repressive response as 911. They have succeeded much more than they thought they would.

New The objective was polarization . . .
. . and it succeeded wonderfully. The middle ground has been reduced to nearly nothing and the influence of Islamic radicals has been greatly increased. Nearly the entire Islamic world has been turned solidly against the U.S.

The Bush Administration stepped in with a degree of stupidity the perpetrators could barely have imagined. Now they've got the U.S. overextended and right where they can hit U.S. targets conveniently and continuously because they're indefensible.

There will be enough colateral damage from U.S. defensive actions to continue increasing hatred of the U.S. in the hearts of Islamic peoples everywhere, but most intenseley in the areas the U.S. occupies, making it ever easier to strike at U.S. targets.

When the U.S. retreats from Iraq it will be left in total chaos, to eventually become dominated by radical Islamic clergy, an Islamic state supporting terrorism against the U.S. The main secular state in the area has been overthrown and is no longer a problem.

Americans, meanwhile, are left with a lot less freedom and a lot of difficulty traveling, and our alies are continuously insulted when our "security" system mistakenly arrests their citizens for being "terrorists". It wasn't that Americans had too much freedom that caused 9/11, but the failure or our so-called "intelligence" agencies.

No, 9/11 didn't hurt Islamic radicals one bit, their mission has been accomplished and accomplished well.
