New Is the internet crawling for everybody?
I'm having MAJOR problems connecting to just about everybody, both from at home and at school.

I hear that a LOT of Windows worms have been released over the past three days or so... can anyone confirm that the problem is truly global, or is it restricted to my geographical area (southeastern Ontario)?

New Not crawling here.
But, I did get 6 virus laden emails today, 5 of them defanged by Road Runner (the ISP). That's more than usual for me.

edit: the night is young, got two more such emails

New I have entire swathes of the network
that are basically inaccessible. For example, ibm.com pops up immediately, but sun.com is completely hosed. Mind you, it's spotty... sometimes it will work, and then five minutes later it will stop responding at all.

It does seem to be beginning to get a bit better, from my home machine at any rate, but it's been bad for something like 36 hours up here.

New Re: Yes here. Was going to comment last Sunday

Have had some awful bouts of sluggishness & our ISP lost their main NSW server on Sunday.

I believe virus attacks had a lot to do with it.

New YES. DNS is crawling Mightily Slow these days.
Response times are getting mighty close to timeout.

Plus, I notice a significant more amount of port 25 traffic than recently seen even with the worms going on.

I dunno WTF gives.

New Apparently there's a war on
I've read a few articles about it now. The three big heavy hitters in the worm leagues are duking it out, up to and including insult messages in their latest versions for each other.

The truly significant message is something like the following: "You're going to ruin our business. Do you want to start a war?" All of the pundits don't get it... they are still in the mode that this is about vandalism, when in fact the motivation is commercial. This is all about installing mail forwarders on compromised machines, so that a spammer can send out 200 emails (using "200 X sizeOf(emailMsg)" as bandwidth consumed that they have to pay for) and having it hit 200 million email boxes. Potentially, it's very big business, and it shows with the increasing sophistication of the antifilter techniques used in the email messages themselves as well as the distribution networks for the spam. Apparently the three main parties that control the majority of compromised boxen out there are now releasing versions that disable/delete competitors on the infected machines as well as infecting new machines.
