Re: Halp on TV question
Yeah sure, you just want to go to the bar :)
You need a rabbit ear antenna and a 75 ohm converter. Has two screw terminals and a F-connector - slap F-connector on corresponding input, rabbit ears to screw terminals, then you're picking up air signals. Works OK for VHF channels.

Cable box
Most modrin Tee Vees have a menu setting for a CATV loop-through. Likely this was the position it was left in - without some plausible reason to think the cable guy acted malevolently:
I'd bet it is still IN that mode. The manual also ought to describe "initial setup" - and with Model# I'd bet you can find that on web - if you tossed the manual, Murican style.
Somewhere you need to tell the setup menu to use direct inputs and Not the loop-back {heh - you say you work in phones?}. There may even be a CPU RESET button, if.. even the cable-box slelection is set in firmware? Something has got to be able to put the set back to out-of-box standard config.
The AUX inputs tend to cycle and show on-screen for a time. But there may ve odd ways that CATV is handled - because of that loop-back.
So then.. who was watching while the guy was in the house? Did anyone see him touch the set? More than to just unplug box and remove? This just seems.. ODD - and I don't believe in simultaneous failures (well, maybe at Maxwell's demon frequency)
Luck,
I.
PS as deS says - if no rabbit ears - stick a thin wire in center of coax: some RF has gotta be around, less'n you're way in the boonies

cable guy not in house, went to outside plug
and disconnected with at the main. Have manual, the web offers copy of same. I do note the loopback which is why I cycled thru the 7 input bus choices. You are thinking of the cable/Antenna loopback, In this system that is not a choice, cable can be hooked up on any bus without indicating whether a cable settop, Antenna, DVD, VCR or Dreamcast gaming system. thanx, bill

If you are getting a display on the TV menu
to cycle through the input choices, then it might possibly be the tuner that is out of wack. Maybe the cable guy sent a spike through your cable when he yanked it out? Unlikely, but possible.

Re: cable guy not in house, went to outside plug
Sounding ominous: fine-tooth comb - ya sure there is no RESET button anywhere? With all electronic switching (as you know) one lousy bit can keep all the guns turned to nada; surely the computer could be in a funk. Maybe unplug IS the reset, and no doubt you've tried that.
Hate 'coincidences' - but no-video can come from so much now, besides actual video circitry, it's looking like scope time (and owners manual won't tell you shit about the schematic..)
Guess you've had a DVD signal in and cycled-blind the inputs. (Trouble is - &^$&$ CPU - you may just Think you cycled those - 'cept if you hear the DVD's sound, well :(

Sorry to hear that
Hope you can see the Super Bowl somewhere else if it isn't fixed, (and if that's something you care about).
Did you ever find the receipt? Just curious.

TV repair business
my father almost went into it. Found a shop that charged for repair work, the guy doing the repairs charged a lot and often put in parts that didn't need to be replaced in addition to ones that did. Sort of like an Automotive Garage that finds all you need is an air filter, but says you got to replace the carborator and the air filter. So my father decided to go to the phone company instead and went and installed computers used with the phone system.
I am sure that with your honest reputation, that you can get more business than a crooked TV repair shop. The only trick is getting the word out to people that you exist.
I doubt that repairs on electronics will be outsourced to India, takes too long to ship things out there. If it is needed to be done on-site or on the bench, you need someone local to do that.
I hope the shop doing the repairs is not crooked. I hope they give you a reasonable price. Good luck.

Debateable
some parts may not be covered under warranty. I've been burned on that before. Also some parts are replaced free, but the labor to do so is not free. Depends on the warranty and who does the warranty repairs. Remember that Crooked TV repair shop I talked about? Charged for warranty work.
