He didn't win that suit and shouldn't have. Neither was that original, other than the step up in effects quality, that IMO being the only real similarity (besides being in the same genre).
I thought the space scenes in this one borrowed alot in style from Space: Above and Beyond, Firefly, and the final battle in SW: Attack of the Clones. And it was nice to see at least an attempt at more realsitic space combat, even if typical laws of movie physics were still in near full force at times.
And yeah the plot themes (robots rise to kill their masters, robots explore their emotions, enemies hidden among us, desperate journey to reach safety) are not too original. I was still entertained. I might even watch the new series if they make one. As long as they don't remake Galactica 1980.
