New ssh client for os400? box? did you ever get one?
We have a need for connecting an as400/iSeries to a linux box using ssh. Is there a client for OS400? I've looked but can't find one.

New Something else to try
[link|http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/tn5250/asdbget/|asdbget] A utility for retreiving AS/400 physical files (databases) from an AS/400 via FTP. Queries the AS/400 for the structure using an AS/400 FTP extensions and produces an ASCII, XML file which can be easily processed with a number of utilties. The project has been merged into tn5250.

We want the as/400 to ssh into the Linux box and run a couple of shell scripts.

New No problem
It's Drew Kime.

I even recommended them for an installation here a while back, but they went with someone we had already worked with. So it shouldn't come as a complete shock that I'd still be pointing people to them.

Besides, you had a question, I thought they could answer it. It would be pretty childish for me to not pass the info along just because they had to let me go when a project wrapped up. Speaking of which, were they nable to help?

and downloaded that file. I was able to unzip it, then untar it. I tried this command from a normal OS/400 prompt:

call qp2term (un-tar <filename>, install)

but it wouldn't execute. I was able to qsh and tar xvf the file, but the foo that's in that file I'm at a loss about. Is there some additional step I need to take to install it? Or is ssh <site> not the correct syntax for this port?

This will save me a ton of work if I can get it going. Thanks a million.

New Late response....
....sorry for the delayed reply. My daughter is undergoing
surgery at Mayo. Not much online time these days.

I did not grab the binary from the developerworks site, but
rather the AIX port off the OpenSSH site. I did:

call qp2term
tar -xvf <file>.tar
config
make
make install
qsh; execute

One issue I have seen with qp2term is missing symbolic links
for the qp2term environment. Not sure about the failure to
execute message your are getting, but likely a link issue.

What is the exact error?

Works well on this end, but I did have to create some links
in qp2term first.

-Slugbug

P.S. Check to make sure you have the Portable Solutions Application Environment (PASE) LPP loaded. If "call qp2term" does not work, you may need to load PASE first. This is a no fee LPP that provides an AIX runtime on the iSeries.

That runs in the PASE environment that is. IBM is telling us that we have to buy one from them. Is that true? When we do the q2term bit, we get a "no suitable C compiler found" message of some sort.

Is there a way to install a C compiler in that environment w/out buying one from IBM?

New Re: Okie-doke. Where does one get a C compiler?
Mike,

On some boxes I do have the IBM compiler, but on others I have implemented the AIX version of gcc and this works fine (though is officially unsupported so as to drive customers to buy the compiler).

In addition, there is a PRPQ (5799-PTL) that you might find useful for doing things in QSHELL or PASE:

[link|http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/enable/site/porting/tools/|http://www-1.ibm.com...te/porting/tools/]
[link|http://www-919.ibm.com/developer/factory/tools/list.html|http://www-919.ibm.c...y/tools/list.html]

I believe the PRPQ costs around $100.

I've not tried it with a V4R4 machine, but believe as long as you have PASE this should work. You can verify whether you have PASE by checking LPPs for 5722SS1 option 33. It might also be useful to have LPP 5799PTL on hand.

You can d/l 5799PTL by searching the "trials and betas" for 5799PTL at this link: [link|http://www.ibm.com/software/|http://www.ibm.com/software/]

Also, IBM expects to officially support SSH on the iSeries by year end, AFAIK.

New Re: You can run the OpenSSH client on the iSeries
Good news for everyone.

IBM has a new product out now that supposedly gives you all the OpenSSH stuff you need (including scp and ssh). The utility is called:

5733-SC1 Portable Utilities for i5/OS

I understand that IBM does not charge anything for the license, provided you have an active software maintenance for your AS/400.

More to that here: [link|http://www.itjungle.com/fhs/fhs022205-story02.html|http://www.itjungle....2205-story02.html]

btw there's not much new in this product, I understand that basically it is the same stuff the guys on this thread have been trying to implement under PASE. ...it's just that you don't have to go through all the untar, unzip, makefile etc. hassle.

Not sure if this thing is supported in pre-V5R3 environments, but surely you'll need 5722-SS2 Opt 33 (Portable App Solutions Environment) installed on your system...
New Cool.

New Re: ssh client for os400? box? did you ever get one?
Did you get this to work? If you unzip the source you need to run the configure script which searches for a number things in your PACE environment. I am just starting on this. I noticed that obviously it uses the unix uname command to id the type of os. It also is mentioned in the install or readme that you need openssl installed as well.

New Actually no.
Other priorities were handed me and I haven't tried it again. At this point whether we keep our iSeries (Model 820) or not is very much up in the air.

I've got a support request open w/IBM concerning Sql performance (a user ran a Crystal Reports query against a view on the iSeries and it took 100% of the processor 1 hour to return the resultset. I then used DTS to move the entire table over to an MS Sql Server (no RAID), created the view and index exactly as it is on the iSeries and had my user connect to MS Sql Server. The resultset was returned in 70 seconds - nearly 60 times faster).

Since our primary use of the iSeries would be as an sql platform, it's future here doesn't look very bright. If, by some miracle, it stays here then I will look back through this thread to get SSH running on it.

Thanks to * for the help and interest.
