The Union has been open to negotiations, but the stores don't want to talk to them. A sure sign that the stores want to break the Unions.
Also I found out that Union members used to have their insurance benefits 100% paid for by the stores, and that the new contract took that away and made the employees pay for most of the cost and only gave them a small (read 5 cents an hour) raise in pay to cover hundreds of dollars in insurance co-pays.
Yep, I knew both of those, that the stores refuse to talk, and that the new contract would make them pay 20-30% or more of their insurance benefits. My friend explained all that to me.
It does sound pretty stupid that the stores refuse to talk or negotiate whatsoever, but whether their intent was to force the Unions out, I don't know. I do know if they try and destroy or break this Union, the rest of the Unions will rise up in support. Some of them are already supporting them now, taking up a collection to help the striking workers.
We shop often at night, so maybe it's just more common for people to shop then. I haven't seen much of a difference at the few stores I've seen.
