It was Brown
a fine Canadian pilot. Of course, another fine Canadian pilot from that war was the incomparable Billy Bishop, the leading ace to actually survive the war (unlike Ball and Ritchofen).

Re: It was Brown
Sorry mate. 'Twas an Aussie sergeant, C.B. Popkin, with a Vickers, from the ground. He had been watching Richthofen's low-level pursuit of a newbie who had got himself in trouble, and had trained his gun in the general direction of the action in case the Baron reappeared, which he did. After the salvo, the Baron lived long enough to make a rough landing in a field, about 20 seconds.
The forensic evidence indicated that the fatal shot came obliquely from the front side, and was travelling on an upward trajectory. A rear shot from a plane is ruled out.
Lucky shot for the sergeant, but the Baron was undefeated in the air. A fitting end.

Reminds me of Sir Edmund Hillary
When George Mallory's body was found, Hillary was asked what he thought about the possibility that Mallory had summitted Everest nearly 30 years before him, Hillary [link|http://www.forbes.com/2003/06/11/cz_jc_0611feat.html|said]: It's one thing to get to the top of a mountain, but it's not really a complete job until you get safely to the bottom.

<weep>Me 2. </weep>
bcnu, Mikem
The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.
- Mark Twain, "Monarchical and Republican Patriotism"

It also had "Hot Rod Lincoln" and "Purple People Easter" and "Teenie Weenie Polka Dot Bikini". I play it on a portable little record player.

Hot Rod Lincoln
used to play that with one of the country bands I played with.
One of the great r'n'r tunes of all time, it's popularity with the country crowd notwithstanding.

Wow, it's up there in the mental attic
Wonder what else is mouldering in that place?
Nice memory. Makes me want to swim, eat hamburgers, and stare at teenage girls.
Gotta get the latest Beatles album.
Think we'll make it to the Moon?
