Whaling caused a decline in whales but killer whales have long prefered sea lions over whales, the kelp crashes in Alaskan waters was due to a number of reasons, herring breed in kelp forests which are harvested for herring roe and exported to japan. Overfishing decimated the kelp beds leading to moratorium on harvests until the year before the exxon valdex which decimated the kelp beds. Sea Lions are killed mostly by fishermen, driftnet ocean vacuuming and toxicity of heavy metals. Otters were decimated by man for pelts until the 1950's when the marine mammal act went into effect. Seals are abundant as always. Killer whales have as much to do with decimating kelp beds as Iraqis have to do with the world trade center bombings. If the sea otters feeding on sea urchins is what keeps the sea urchins from destroying kelp beds, wouldn't this have happened to the California coast? ----------------------------------------- It is much harder to be a liberal than a conservative.
