but the 1440 doesn't show up as a selection when I select IP Printing, only when I select USB.

I did try the single Brother model that shows up(don't recall model at the moment). The printer put a page out with code on it, followed by a bunch of blank sheets.

I just went thru exercise to allow wife's OS X iBook to access WiFi printer.
Nup - model not supported.
