Mac OS X 10.2 uses CUPS as the spooler backend. You should be able to use the Brother HL-1440 [link|http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-HL-1440|PPD
] from linuxprinting.org. You will also need the foomatic-rip script which is the filter which calls an external rasterizer to convert the PostScript to PCL4.
On the other hand, you could try the installer package at [link|http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hl1250/|here]. It's geared towards locally-connected printers I think, but the PPD files should be installed, and if they are, you should be able to choose the HL-1440 as a model in the Print Center for an LPR printer.
