Is this OSX?
If so, you could try installing lpr etc. I don't know where all the *nix stuff for OSX is to be found, but I've heard that there's a lot of it already.

Actually, it's easier than that
The OS X Print Center already knows about LPR printers.
- Start up Print Center (it's in Applications/Utilities - Click on Add - Select IP Printing from the pull-down list (if it's not already selected) - Type in the host name or IP address for the printer. - Uncheck 'Use default queue on printer' - Type in a queue name (You can type anything here, make it easy to remember) - Select the printer model - Click on Add.
That should do it.

did that
but the 1440 doesn't show up as a selection when I select IP Printing, only when I select USB.
I did try the single Brother model that shows up(don't recall model at the moment). The printer put a page out with code on it, followed by a bunch of blank sheets.

Therein lies the flaw in OS X
I just went thru exercise to allow wife's OS X iBook to access WiFi printer. Nup - model not supported.

Re: Yep, OS X 10.2.?(not sure last digit)
Mac OS X 10.2 uses CUPS as the spooler backend. You should be able to use the Brother HL-1440 [link|http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-HL-1440|PPD ] from linuxprinting.org. You will also need the foomatic-rip script which is the filter which calls an external rasterizer to convert the PostScript to PCL4.
On the other hand, you could try the installer package at [link|http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hl1250/|here]. It's geared towards locally-connected printers I think, but the PPD files should be installed, and if they are, you should be able to choose the HL-1440 as a model in the Print Center for an LPR printer.

thanx
I actually found that site yesterday and was trying the stuff from their [link|http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/|Mac OS X] page. That one worked great USB, but still no luck IP printing. I still get a single page followed by a bunch of blank sheets.
The single page starts with %!PS-Adobe-3.0.

Try Using CUPS's web interface instead
Point your browser to http://localhost:631/, which should present you with CUPS administration interface. I'd just done that on my dad's Powerbook. I haven't tried adding a new printer, but the printer (HP LaserJet 1200 connected to Airport base station) I had added earlier using Print Center is there. Maybe this would work around the problem you're having. Edit: Oh! It also looks like the PostScript was not rasterized. You should check the content of the HL-1440 PPD and see which filter is it using. Specifically, look for the lines: \n*cupsFilter:\t"application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip"\n*%pprRIP: foomatic-rip other\n Also, see if foomatic-rip is found in cupsd's PATH. Edit 2: [link|http://www.linuxprinting.org/kpfeifle/LinuxKongress2002/Tutorial/VII.cups-help/VII.cups-help.html#tell|Here] is a troubleshooting guide which should help track down the problem.

Thanx!
I'd tried the interface over the weekend. I'll check out the PPD and the trouble shooting guide tonight.
