New WARNING LAPTOP USERS
Something about acpi on Linux is seriously broken. I've noticed the following behavior on both a ThinkPad and a Tecra - the machine has BIOS-level auto shutoff of the display. The acpi daemon tries to turn off the display but instead a strange, glowing pattern begins to fill the LCD, as the graphics chip heats up. This actually destroyed the Radeon in a ThinkPad I was using. The dangerous thing is - even leaning on the power button might require as much as 10 seconds before the machine shuts down. So, if you notice this happening, unjack the power if on AC and take the battery out as fast as your little hands can do it. I'd recommend a fire drill.

New Which version?
...of ACPI and kernel?

I've got the 2.4.20 kernel (self-compiled), and I think I've got ACPI installed. I don't seem to have issues such as you described on my Toshiba Satellite.

New Re: Which version?
2.4.20 - same.
\n[voyager] root 10: ~> rpm -qa | grep acpi\nacpi-1.0.1-70\n

It isn't predictable - my guess is, it's a timing issue in the daemon.

The safe thing is to turn off display management and use your Fn key to manually power down the display when you're going to be away.

New It is broken in every Kernel
Until 2.4.22.

There was an issue going from S4->S5->S4->S3

You have to disallow S5 on older kernels. Is fixed in the latest 2.6.0-test kernels as well.

Hope this helps.

I'll even go so far as to concede that today's postliterate teenagers are already sufficiently impaired by pop culture that anything that serves to make them even more scatterbrained is rather in the way of gilding the lily, and should not be encouraged.
