So then - and, while it's early-on
..in this series of coordinated? attacks of the past week or so:
Is This -??- Yet!! an effective way of Getting the Attention of the clueless masses - particularly of 'decisionmakers' in Bizness:
About What Lies Ahead\ufffd for them, so long as they are completely locked-in to unstable, massively-vulnerable and basically {so I have read here and elsewhere, in minute detail - over the years}
UnFixable Products [via inherently Bad Design\ufffd] of One Company?
Corollary (yup, like that word) - Does it 'help' such a reevaluation, that: this Company has demonstrated disdain or outright hostility to All.. in its pricing, 'servicing' and say, "non-listening Company Policies" - ever since approaching Monopoly status ??
Or is this just naive wishful-thinking?

Was on my soapbox today...
We are currently evaluating new products in a "upgrade or replace" situation for an enterprise campus authoring (templates, whiteboard, yadayada). We were in a presentation by a company who's product is a squeal/IdisI server only (read com+/asp hellish nightmare - like 15 or so other boxen I inherited and now must babysit). The current system is running on Solaris/Apache, well equipped box, 99.99999% availability, yadayada.
So, when during the demonstration I see the tell tale sign of client browser incompatability (the dreaded asp redirect) and see the dreaded sluggishness, I say, "I see this demo is running on 2K server with MSSQL/IIs. Does it run on a stable, highly available, scalable platform as well?"
Dead silence.
"no"
"Any plans to port it to MySQL, Oracle, etc... on Linux, Solaris, etc..."
"no"
I leave. The PHB's that littered the room call me back after the presentation to talk to me about what I "think" about the product... I say, "I administer 49 production servers. Of those 14 are W2K servers. I spend approximately 85% of my time on care and feeding of those. I have firewalled them to almost unusability to keep them from just the script kiddies. Last week I went on vacation after applying service pack 4 to seven of my W2K machines. When I returned all seven of the machines had been crashing intermittantly. I read the event log. All now were suffering from com+ errors. I go to Windows update site - 4 new "critical" updates. gswut? One of the updates fixes a com+ "vulnerability". Windows admins don't even need to be hacked by outsiders. They just have to apply updates to make their systems unavailable. It's bullshit..."
I ranted for another fifteen minutes about how anyone with even a double digit IQ could see that it may be prudent to at least take into consideration how miserable a track record MS has with NOS's, etc...
At the end, two come back with "most corporations use W2K - they don't seem to have any problems - what's wrong with you guys". I laugh my ass off and exit again... Result? Stay tuned...
Don't hold your breath, Ash, I'm not.
Just a few thoughts,
Screamer
But take your time, think a lot, Why, think of everything you've got. For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

I get the impression you weren't heard
- either because they really don't know anything about what you do, or don't know anything at all (!) except maybe InfoWorld-type BS? Is that where "everybody's in the same boat and don't seem to have any problems" - came from? What a terminally ignorant sentiment to reveal!
Well I know that your English is pretty good and, I would have thought that even a biz guy could process, "14 are W2K servers. I spend approximately 85% of my time on care and feeding of those." I mean: that's fucking basic cost accounting, innit?
Like, "we have 49 trucks; I spend 85% of my time keeping 14 of them running; what do you think we ought to do?" - D'Oh and these guys are contemplating maybe using next [what you said] !?
(Which suggests that, prolly none would have the comprehension, let alone patience - even to glimpse [link|http://aaxnet.com/editor/edit029.html| Andrew's] comprehensive '03 summary of er The Road Ahead -->|
This is a bloody University! to boot. Now That's scary. Last bastion.
I try to correct for getting older, with 'standards' maybe getting pickier through experience.. but even trying to see that - I can't remember a time of such idiotic 'movies' [never mind the Tube] and such utterly Stupid commentary (all around; never mind the topic, either - politics has always been Pure Shit, so it isn't that). Who would have Imagined.. observing a disintegration so palpable that, you can see it While it's happening ?? (Usually you have to get the book and see what the last 10 years was sorta like ;-)
Dunno Dan.. what/where could you move to? IT sounds so fucked, that ulcers could become a litmus disease for those who stay too long. Y'know?
(And while inertia/habit will play it's part, I may yet have to face migration, accentuated by whatever possibility exists of .. there being no Regime Change here. Enough!!)
Luck,

Re: basic cost accounting
I suspect Dan would need to show a multicolored Power Point slide with pie charts (perhaps with sound) to bring home the point. Mixing units, i.e. counts of systems and the time as a percentage of that available is beyond comprehension of PHBs. Might as well recite a poem in Swahili.

Impressions II - (for next? Round)
As rich a source as is Andrew's, my febrile mind tends to distill all the supporting details down to ONE er Power Punt Slide. I guess I should CHARGE for this so-obviously NEEDED service in the heady-atmosphere of Murican Big Bizness. \ufffd Ashton Brown 2003 [Anyone who NEEDS to hear this simple message in 2003, does not deserve to hear it For Free. Willful Dumbth should Not be Rewarded with charity.]
[pre-Principles] (When in Exec-La-La-Land, KISS is the only specie of the realm: I Get That. er Finally... :( (And yes too - no Power Point sending an illiterate PHB to read Tufte's brilliant disembowellment of their favorite infant-language toy - even if you explained what a link is for. I See This.)
MY SLIDE would say (after further editing for any words over 3 syllables - of course):
[Slide 1] THOSE who perceive the danger to their ownership of [ALL] of their own data! - in time = Before it is encrypted into yet another proprietary [dbase] format next, and placed ON M$' OWN PHYSICAL SERVERS:
THOSE will be moving in an orderly fashion, functional-module by-module to - an operating system proven to be stable, scalable and reliable AND whose entire source code is freely available, for every function.
THOSE who in fact, accomplish this orderly transition: shall enjoy next, NOT MERELY freedom from 95.13% of the wasted time and lost productivity of current worms, virii, Trojans, crashes, reboots, security breaches, patches, unwanted 'upgrades' and unscheduled MAINTENANCE:
THESE SHALL, perhaps for the first time since embracing 'computing' - actually OWN and POSSESS all of their vital BUSINESS DATA, safe from outside-ordered: ALTERATION (or HOSTAGE-holding via Draconian 'BSA' Troopers with the power to arbitrarily DISABLE one's entire System).
LASTLY, THESE shall next enjoy a LOWER COST-OF-DOING-BUSINESS, a thus COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE over all those who would not see, will not change and shall suffer the fate perfectly encapsulated by the phrase:
"EMBRACE, EXTEND, EXTINGUISH" (this can be explained, after the meeting)
or to put this all most simply:
YOU 'HAVE' NO BUSINESS THAT IS *YOURS* UNLESS / UNTIL YOU OWN AND POSSESS ALL OF YOUR BUSINESS DATA - AND *NO-ONE ELSE* DOES!
{after applause...} [Slide 2] {blush}

Three problems:
1) There is no trend line moving from lower left to upper right.
2) There aren't enough colors, and no fade from one color to another contrasted with a fade of the same color the other way preferably in a swoosh. You also failed to use any of the clip art that comes with PowerPoint, particularly the glob people and that horizontal blue line with the orange swooshie thing at the end that looks kind of like the blue thing is moving so fast the end is on fire. But the lack of clip art isn't a fatal flaw, just a few points off for style.
3) It contains an idea that might be acted upon. Worse still, the idea could result in actual profit.

Responding to Worthy reviewers
Would it be best, then, just to show a Daffy Duck cartoon and hand out a few free golf passes?
Marking [slide 1] Censored - don't bother to look. It's really Bad. [slide 2] can stay as it is (audio).
Am I getting it?

Thanks for the advice...
Just got back from a follow up meeting. I didn't use your slide (verbatum - :-0), but I did incorporate some of your ideas. I choose my normal route of attacking ideas and not the people who were espousing them. Believe it or not, (and sweet irony) we did eliminate all of the competition and will upgrade due to the cost of trying to migrate existing data to a proprietary vendor's format (com+/ASP).
What is now even more disturbing to me is just how many homebrews exists that were built as a result of two week courses on VB or Visual Studio... Most of the developers themselves do not understand the types of issues and problems that building their apps on proprietary frameworks and OS's create in compatibility - even between different versions of the same proprietary OS. Yada yada, sorry... I know you guys are the choir.
My frustration is growing as I get older. I may have to finally keep a New Year's resolution and start drinking - just to dull my senses enough to function in the current IT environment.
All's okay for now.
