Follow some links
This uses the same engine as the [link|http://www.moller.com|flying car]. Yes, it's had its first hover tests!

Unfortunately
Moller is a charlatan who has taken millions in peoples money on his Skycar scam.
I have a lot of material on it and went public over 2years back, on the net, stating why he is a charlatan and that he just keeps dangling the 'any-day-now' bait but never delivers.
He has been feeding this flyingcar story to the press for over 20 years, he got serious in the past ten (he got serios, the kycar never did). In the VTOL industry he is considered a joke but he has an incredible web site.

Moller's skycar
I do believe I saw the first puff piece on the inventor in the Los Angeles Times, possibly as early as 1971, probably no later than 1974. Every now and again over the years I'll read a new report--the skycar is always just a year or two away from production. No doubt they're just waiting for fusion power to be perfected.
Do we really want casual flight made available to the Teeming Millions? Have you checked out the way they (not thee or me, of course) handle ground transport?
cordially,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.

Sounds very much like Wiegart's "Vector"
[link|http://www.ferraris-online.com/Articles/SCM_0004.html|Link]: In a road test by Top Gear, a British magazine, in August of 1998, the Vector was summarized as "very probably the worst car in the entire world". Ha! :-) Then there's that mile long ship we discussed a while ago... edit: changed link to original source. Cheers, Scott.

Ah then.. the spirit of L. Ron Hubbard Lives, then
The [Pie-in-the] Sky Car. I see.
As to Rand's preview of what 3-D hit-runs would be like -?- The Sky-Car's falling! The Sky-Car's falling!
See no solutions for this, short of breaking the thumbs of a certain fraction of the opposed-thumbs contingent - to protect them from selves. I suspect this solution will be no better than.. the lectronic voting machines one.
Pandora's Box is so open it's a hypercube: If'n good old Leslie Groves and a few close personal friends could cobble up a nuke .. why, what's stoppin little Timmy from followin his elders?
But looking beyond the merely superficial aspects of er temporarily fleeing the trashed surface of Terra, and its peculiarly suicidal dominant life-forms:
Would anyone like to get in on the ground floor of our [link|http://planetscapes.com/solar/eng/io.htm| EIEIO-to-Io] program? Forget yer PNAC fantasy - this here's the PNIC! Pre-IPO shares are available after your Moral Certitude investment is audited.
(A fallback to [link|http://planetscapes.com/solar/eng/titan.htm#stats| Titan] is contemplated, should cold-storage be needed for extension of the immigrants' lifetimes.. umm while the teensy Sulfur problem in the new digs is abated.) Don't worry about the little atmosphere problem either: everything will be air conditioned, in the Model dwellings. It's practically a done deal - don't miss out!

Maybe not..
Eons ago I toyed (!) with the idea of living across the (SF) Bay and 'commuting' via Benson Gyrocopter .. Long story about That little er innovation..
This looks like it has the gliding trajectory of a Rock. Think: helicopter, where the dead-man's curve has no parabolic 'bulge' along the X-axis; no "autogyroing gown": It stops (over 25ish feet UP) and You Die.
Then add in: millions of transistor junctions ==> at least triple redundancy and the capability of landing.. sorta safely - with One of Two engines operating. ie I see: WEIGHT, complexity, $$$$
But a cute idea. SOmeday.

Can't you ride the Metra trains?
Or take the EL? Both beat the hell outta driving your car to get around. (Unless, of course, you work where neither reach. Then you have my deepest sympathies.)

In chicago (et al) its METRA
See [link|http://www.metrarail.com/|Metra's site]
Linc, METRA is wonderful, but until they lay in a path from Waukegan to Round Lake, or Hoffman estates, for exmaple, it won't work for me....

Never happen
Don't you know by now that Chicago is the Hub Of All That Is Good And Wonderful In This Area? The plight of the common fool who needs to get from one suburb to the other is forevermore relegated to taking the express(?)-ways. What an oxymoron that is.

Never happen? Mebbe...
...but the so-called STAR route (Joliet to O'Hare via Hoffman Estates over the EJ&E and I-90) is a start. And if they just extend the EJ&E leg northward, it will eventually end up in Waukegan!
One can always dream, can't one...
