During 2 1/2 hours of sustained mortar fire Monday, a shell slammed into a U.S. Embassy residential compound where some 10,000 terrified Liberians had taken refuge, killing 25 people, aid workers said. Many more were wounded, including two Liberian embassy guards.
Enraged Liberians dragged bodies from the residential compound and lined them up in front of the embassy, next to a wall emblazoned with the American seal. The group demanded to know why Washington has not sent troops to end more than a decade of strife in the West African nation.
"We're dying here," screamed some in the crowd, as two American servicemen in camouflage watched from behind bulletproof glass.
I say:
Either we go in and kick ass or we look weak. And we know what happens when we look weak. 9/11 is what happens.
An estimated 600 dead there so far because we haven't intervened. That's only a tiny fraction of those slaughtered under Saddam. But give it time. No, on second thought, let's not give it time.

Our marlowe keeps an eye on the global hotspots. There are so many of them: on which, when and why should Our Nation's Terrible Swift Sword next descend? Well, Liberia, for one. Why? Either we go in and kick ass or we look weak. How keenly reasoned! How statesmanlike! How...how oddly familiar! Surely I've heard this reasoning before?...Why, yes! I remember now! I was but a beardless high school senior that distant Thursday evening in late April 1970 when President Nixon let us in on another component of his Secret Plan to End the War™ (specifically the invasion of Cambodia) in the following deathless words: if, when the chips are down, the world's most powerful nation, the United States of America, acts like a pitiful, helpless giant, the forces of totalitarianism and anarchy will threaten free nations and free institutions throughout the world. That marlowe apparently doesn't recognize that in making his present keen analysis he is, to paraphrase Newton and Nixon, standing on the shoulders of "a pitiful, helpless giant," is altogether understandable: surely on that April day (less than a week before those soi-disant students got what was coming to 'em at Kent State) he was, if even among the living, still filling his parents with loathing and his diapers with sludge several times a night--come to think of it, he has continued as he has begun, with iwethey in the unlikely in loco parentis role. cordially, [edit: tweak] Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.

Last I checked he was all for the US violating the sovereignty of the current regime in Liberia. But maybe he's changed his mind since then.
Kofi Annan was also making a big noise about it. I wonder why.
But I'll grant you this much: you and your compatriots know a lot more about looking weak than I do.

Not everywhere else.
Just where murderous monsters rule, and particularly where they threaten the safety of decent countries. In other words, all the places where the usual gang of hypocrites would prefer we *not* go in. (And no, I don't think Mr. Annan is entirely sincere in wanting US intervention in Liberia. I do hope we call his bluff soon.)
If this doesn't meet with your approval, well... that's your problem.
