Fire at the Gateway Arch
There is some sort of electrical fire going on at the base of the Arch. There are crews on the scene, but it appears to be some building that houses power for the Arch, and it's belching black smoke that's very consistent.
No one has been hurt, but the entire area around the base has been evacuated. People up in the arch are being brought down as long as the power still works, and they are working to quickly evacuate the arch.

They said that its a building that houses the A/C controls and such for the Arch, so the A/C is out in the Arch, making it pretty hot. The fire broke out in the Transformer Vault, and they aren't putting any water on it, based on it being an electrical fire. Wonder if they are gonna let it burn itself out... yikes. Smoke is everywhere, even seems to be drifting across the highway! The FBI was on the scene immediately in case of terrorism, but it appears that it was nothing of the sort at this time. There are now reported to be three transformers burning in an underground vault by the leg of the Arch and they have shut down some of the power in the Boatmens building and the Radisson Hotel.
No people are being evacuated from those buildings at this time, but there is limited power in the buildings.

Monument in St. Louis to commemorate westward expansion.
Free-standing arch in the form of an inverted catenary, a curve that has the unique property of having no bending moments present anywhere along the curve when loaded by gravity - thus the arch can be self-standing without being extremely massive (think of the Arc de Triomphe).

Westward expansion could have been done with proper regard for the locals. The destruction of the Indian cultures came relatively later than the push westward, and was speared by Sherman and Sheridan, who didn't get enough in the civil war.

It has funky elevators
there's a viewing deck on the top of the arch. There's some unique elevators to take you to the top. They have to compensate for the curve of the arch. Instead of the usual "box" that normal elevators have, these have sideways cylinders with seating in them. As you go up the arch, the "cans" rotate so your feet mostly point towards the earth.

I eat great, edible tomatoes on a regular basis. Try an organic one some time. You may be surprised.
ObDrook'sObjection: Regarding Drew's objection that organic just tastes better because it comes from local producers, I would like to note that we have been enjoying some wonderful organic nectarines from California this week. Best damn nectarine I have had in years, in fact.

Oh yes - sorta-better can be found.
But that pale pinkish rock which passes for such in supermarkets (now for decades) is what I mainly meant. Corp-grocers are permitted to call millions of these cardboard things tomatoes and many folks cannot afford better. Bet many city kids have no idea what a tomato can be like.
I note that the 'premium' grades, including "organics" thus far - with vine shoots attached, for one popular option - are only slightly better: texture a bit better but flavor is at least 40 dB down.
I'm wondering if the US seed stock has all been replaced with variants these transistorized, armor-plated placebos? Soon my neighbor will have a new crop. These will be better than LuckSafeMart but last year's was still a mere shadow of the deep-red luscious fruit I recall getting from a friend's Marysville farm regularly, 10+ years ago. That's why I question the seed stock.. Google time.

Well here in Florida tomato capital of the east coast
the local feild maters that show up vine ripened are not the pastel carboard they ship elsewhere. I think what you are refering to is a "Salad" Tomato that can travel 3 weeks and still be cut into recognisable shapes. Those are nasty. In florida we also get Local Beefstake, best of the breed and in the fall get Canadian Beefstakes, even better. Since the seeds in a beefstake are rather non existant I would wonder about that seed stock as well. When I used to grow them Stokes was my favorite but that was early 70's

It's kinda a national thing, like the Statue Of Liberty, that people come to visit from all over the country, so I thought it might be important to mention that it was closed due to the fire. I do realize not everyone here is from the US. :) It won't reopen till Saturday, according to the news, so if anyone is planning to come visit it, that's when they expect it to reopen. Yes, I know I'm coming in 'way late here (and haven't posted much lately)
But the subject line had me visualizing an artillery corps set up in the maze of twisty passages... er, Interstate bridges on the east side of the river, and I was going to suggest that the SBC Building might be an easier and more socially acceptable target.
