Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Alas, OS/2, I knew you well.
It looks like it has come to the end of the road for my beloved OS/2. At least the hope is fading fast that I'll be able to continue with it.

Putting a newer system together and so far the count is:

Original Warp 4: Can get past initial boot disks and get to the end of the first round with no issue. Upon reboot, just a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. Nothing. NADA. Zilch. Strike one.

MCP: Worse than Warp 4. Can't even get the bloody thing through the first stage without it freaking out. Strike two.

eCS 1.0: Will not install as long as I use all default settings. Basically gives me the same results as MCP. If I go into the advanced menu and select Standard IDE over Enhanced IDE, I can get to the same point as Warp 4. Same blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Strike three.

The 10G boot drive I'm attempting to use is being formatted for Win XP Pro as I type this. I've got to at least see if I can get anything on this system.

This is a profoundly depressing moment for me. Thankfully, I've kept the originals drives (both boot and data drives) set aside for now to see what I'm going to do, but I'm not hopeful.

System is a Giga-Byte GA-7VRXP with Athlon 2000+, 512MB PC2700, Matrox G-400 Dual Head (from previous system), 10G WD HD, Tekram DC-390U2W (yes I even left it out of the system while attempting the install), IDE CD-ROM, and Plextor 1210 SCSI burner. The Giga-Byte board has onboard sound (CT-5880) and LAN (RealTek 8100 series), which I found both have OS/2 drivers.

Any of you fellow OS/2 gurus wanna tackle this one?
New A few things to possibly consider...
1) As I related in [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=99562|#99562], some motherboards have timing issues with PCI boards. You might try a different slot for your SCSI card. Oh, you've already done that. :-/

2) Memory timing can give similar problems. Can you slow the system down and/or try different RAM?

3) I recently got a copy of [link|http://xenia.sote.hu/~kadzsol/rexx/sajat/updcd.htm|updCD]. I haven't tried it yet though. Perhaps there are some later kernels, fixes, etc. on it that will help you through the install.

4) If you do IRC, you might want to try for pointers with people at [link|http://www.scoug.com/help/livehelp.html|SCOUG and VOICE].

Nothing much shows up on google: USB problems sharing IRQs with sound cards and LAN cards; unable to recognize new HDs; etc. I didn't find anyone running Warp on this board.

If XP runs OK on it, and you like the board and system otherwise, you may have simply found one that Warp etc. doesn't like. My guess is there's something about the board that Warp doesn't like (e.g. BIOS, RAM) and that you'd have better luck with a different board. Or you may simply have a bad motherboard.

I hope you get it figured out. Please report back either way.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Results so far
XP Pro: Installed without incident. One or two devices not recognized, but there are drivers on the CD that came with the board. Everything plays.

Mandrake 9.0: Installed without incident. All devices recognized. Everything seems to play ok.

eCS 1.0: Decided to try this again. Selected Advanced install options and choose 1)Standard IDE, 2)JJSCDROM, 3)Generic Int13 (at least I think that's right). Set up a 1G boot partition prior to install. Got through the second stage on the install, but it didn't load the LAN driver. Still working on that.

It's getting closer.
New give the blinking cursor time
Dunno why, but on my new hardware it pauses 60+ seconds after the blinking cursor shows up and before the eCS boot blob.

I would never have thought to wait, but received a phone call during one installation attempt. When I came back the eCS 1.0 installation screen was up and ready to go. It's annoying, but livable. I've heard that eCS 1.1 might correct the pause but have been too busy to install it.

New An hour+? I don't think so. ;-)
I'm getting there. Each attempt gets me a little closer.

So far, I'm getting to the second stage with eCS. The trick seems to be to use Standard IDE instead of Enhanced, and selecting the Generic Int13 from the advanded options menu from the boot CD.

I've also determined that I need to use the OEM driver for the Realtek LAN card. The one listed at [link|http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?series=16&Software=True|http://www.realtek.c...=16&Software=True] under the heading for OS/2 doesn't work, but the one from the OEM disk (listed just above OS/2) does.

I'm working on getting the network protocols straightened out now. I don't need NetBIOS and I have to find a way to add Netware support without screwing everything else up.

I figure about 6 more install attempts and I'll have it together. ;-)
New only a minute
60+ seconds, not minutes

New Understood that.
Just letting you know how long I waited at one point.

Anyway, still not done. Next is the sound and then Netware.
New thought you misread mine :-)

New RealTek driver
from an earlier [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=88554|Post #88554]
Had problems with the built in RealTek LAN. The driver off the RealTek website(V3.23 7/28/99) would lock up the system during the boot sequence. I tracked down a newer driver(v3.23vk 8/9/02) at [link|http://pws.prserv.net/mckinnis/nicpak|Chuck McKinnis' NICPAK page] and cleared up that problem.
I see there's an even newer RealTek driver now.

Darrell Spice, Jr. [link|http://www.spiceware.org/cgi-bin/spa.pl?album=./Artistic%20Overpass|Artistic Overpass]\n[link|http://www.spiceware.org/|SpiceWare] - We don't do Windows, it's too much of a chore
New The results so far
Got eCS 1.0 installed. Got XP Pro installed. Some issue with installing Mandrake. Will have to fix that later.

Onboard LAN card works. Still haven't gotten around to getting Netware support installed, but it's not that pressing at the moment.

Onboard CT5880 doesn't work with any freely available drivers that I've been able to track down. The driver appears to see the card (at least there are no errors), but I'm not getting any sound. The Play button in the Sound applet is still grayed out, so I assume the card's not working. I don't have access to IBM's SWC nor am I authorized to access anything at the eCS site (don't ask, long story), so I'm up against a wall on this. May have to use the SB Live! card I purchased just in case and disable the onboard CT5880. Not the best choice, but at least SB Live! drivers aren't behind a pay-for-use toll bridge.

All in all, not the most trouble-free install (I probably re-installed at least a dozen times), but at least I've got some sort of OS/2 system running and I can get PMMail to work.

Man, do I have a headache......

New When you've got some time....
It would be nice if you could run [link|ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/benchmark/sysb094g.zip|SysBench] on it and summarize the results. I haven't seen any benchmarks on a fast OS/2 system in several years. The fastest system listed in the package is Trevor's dual PPro 233 system from 1998...

TIA!

And congratulations on your success. :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: When you've got some time....
I couldn't get it to finish the PM-Graphics section. It wouldn't complete the Text Render part.

On the disk I/O it blows chunks because it's an all IDE system.

For CPU stuff: 1653.186 CPU integer-marks and 400.533 CPU floating point-marks

Other points of interest: 235.589 DIVE-marks and 3919.830 Memory-marks

Here's the Graphics section including the missing Text Render:

Graphics
BitBlt S->S copy : 475.578 Million pixels/second
BitBlt M->S copy : 88.899 Million pixels/second
Filled Rectangle : 7666.752 Million pixels/second
Pattern Fill : 3810.259 Million pixels/second
Vertical Lines : 41.816 Million pixels/second
Horizontal Lines : 1045.874 Million pixels/second
Diagonal Lines : 73.671 Million pixels/second
Text Render : --.--- Million pixels/second
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Total : --.--- PM-Graphics-marks

Hope that makes some sense to you. ;-)
New Thanks!
New Slight correction on something I said.
On the disk I/O it blows chunks because it's an all IDE system.

I should have said, "..blows chunks with the standard IBM IDE driver." I re-ran some of the disk tests with Dani's IDE driver and got much better results. I'll summarize below.

I checked the SysBench site and those final scores under Dani's driver meet or beat the best scores posted so far.

Pretty slick.....
New Daniela Engert's amazing.
She's done so much to support OS/2 on new hardware. Imagine what she could do if IBM was behind her...

Thanks for posting the new numbers. I'm especially impressed by the low CPU load numbers. Those are the type of numbers I'm used to seeing with SCSI systems.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Yup
I'm especially impressed by the low CPU load numbers. Those are the type of numbers I'm used to seeing with SCSI systems.

And I haven't even gotten around to installing the Tekram driver for the DC-390U2W that's in this system. It's currently driving the Plextor CD-RW. My hope is to add a SCSI CD-ROM drive somewhere along the way so I can really off-load burning to the SCSI chain and not worry about making coasters.

One of these days I might get around to installing a complete SCSI system, but not anytime soon.

Anyway, got lots of things to re-install over the next few days...
New She is some kind of genius
It's absolutely amazing. Makes me want to go to Warpstock Europe just to thank her.

Why not not come to Warpstock in San Francisco? She may be there. She's been to the last one. Not sure about the Toronto one though.

New AGP issues?
Put in a PCI video card and BIOS it to the default.
-drl
New This has got squat to do with AGP, Ross.
I've installed OS/2 on other systems with AGP (the previous system in fact) and haven't seen anything like this.

If no OS would load, I'd consider that possibility, but both Linux and XP loaded fine.

As you may have noticed (read the rest of the thread), I've made progress and eCS is up and running, so I'd have to say you're way off base.
New And the final tally is....
XP Pro, Mandrake, and eCS installed and working.

Had to diable the onboard sound card and stick in an SB Live! card, but everybody's playing just fine and dandy.

Got Netware Requester support installed in eCS and have access to my Netware 4.1 server and all my MP3s.

Now to re-install apps and get my life back together....
New Woot.
Dam. Fuck.

And all this with a *DEAD* OS!

On the other hand, I think I know what that's all about. ;-)

I've made multi-boot systems since 1994 when I tried my first version of OS/2. Of course, it was only OS/2 and DOS, but it was there. I simply can't imagine not having more than one OS on a machine and I'll be damned if I'll give up OS/2 without a fight.
New Re: And the final tally is....
What are you booting with? Do I need to ask?

BTW you can hit Netware from Linux as well (direct mount NCP fs).

(Of all amazing coincidences, there's a Novell commerical on the tube as I type..I can't remember the last Novell commercial I saw..)
