Wow... the sheer balls of the move is astounding
That's an interesting angle they're trying to pick up.
If it flies in the US, it really will spell the doom of the IT industry in that country.

I may not understand completely
Microsoft is licencing SCOs technology. I don't see the problem unless somehow they got exclusive rights. If MS bought SCO for the purpose of owning the IP and continuing the law suite, I would consider that to be a big deal. As it is stated, it just looks like MS can incorporate Unix code in their own OS. I don't see how anyone else is impacted.

I 'd wonder...
Exactly *HOW* much that license fee was.
If it was a small amount similar to the amount IBM pays. Might it maybe be to the tune of a few hundreds of million... to prop up SCO during this time of flux?
Bah.

Looks like Gryge needs to re-write a bit
The explanation favored by conspiracy theorists is that Microsoft is paying a lot of money to SCO or SCO executives to illustrate one of its more effective anti-Linux points, that Linux users may be vulnerable to intellectual property liability.
While this explanation makes logical sense, Microsoft would have to be a whole lot more desperate than I think they are to take the risk of exposure. The basic rule here is, "Don't attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity", and there seems to be enough stupidity at SCO to choke a buffalo. Care to re-think that? At a mimimum, it looks like Mocrosoft is giving SCO the opportunity to say, "See? People are still paying for licenses. So our Intellectual property must actually be worth something. Microsoft wouldn't just give us the money for no consideration, would they?"

Why *NO*....
They wouldn't just GIVE money away.
They'd expect *SOMETHING* in return for it.
<hypothetical> Oh wait, why does IBM only pay $200K per quarter and Micrsoft pays $200M per quarter. The same IP is being licensed. Boy I guess IBM got a GREAT DEAL, either that or Microsoft is a push-over during negotiations. As we ALL know Microsoft wouldn't do anything underhanded like that. </hypothetical>
Errrm, yeah, that's the ticket.

Yup, changes are up.
This definitely clarifies the situation. I also think it will anger IBM and greatly increase the liklihood of a countersuit.
It sure was timely to get the article up last night and ready for these exciting events.

spin, spin, spin...
From their press release:
LINDON, Utah-May 19, 2003-The SCO Group (SCO) (Nasdaq: SCOX), the owner of the UNIX operating system, today announced it has licensed its UNIX technology including a patent and source code licenses to Microsoft Corporation. The licensing deal ensures Microsofts intellectual property compliance across all Microsoft solutions and will better enable Microsoft to ensure compatibility with UNIX and UNIX services.
"There are many companies in the IT industry who acknowledge and respect the intellectual property of software," said Chris Sontag, senior vice president and general manager for SCOs intellectual property division. "With this announcement, Microsoft is clearly showing the importance of maintaining compatibility with UNIX and Microsofts software solutions through their software licensing. This important step will better help their customers implement UNIX and Windows solutions."
Microsoft joins thousands of IT companies, educational institutions and customers and that have licensed the UNIX source code for the benefit of their organizations. UNIX is one of the most widely used operating systems in the industry for implementing highly scalable computing solutions for high-end computing.

Uhhhhh ... really?
The SCO Group (SCO) (Nasdaq: SCOX), the owner of the UNIX operating system ... I see they don't mention that the "" on "UNIX" means it's reserved to someone else. Ballsy to claim you own something when you don't even own the name, meaning you don't get to say whether it is or is not what you say.

One of the signs of the Apocalypse
Microsoft licensing Unix source code. Soon the four horsemen will appear. :)
But anyway, didn't Microsoft use FreeBSD Unix code in NT? So Microsoft is just trying to get legit and use Unix code without getting sued by SCO like IBM did. Obviously the next Windows will use some SCO Unix code in it. Too bad, I thought it was going to be re-written by scratch.
Shades of Xenix, Microsoft is dealing with SCO again!

Do you EVER think before typing?
Yes, there's BSD code in the NT TCP/IP stack.
Big hairy deal. It's well within the licence, which you haven't read.
Why "Obviously"? Why "Too bad"?
Norm. Here's a clue. Don't use it all at once.
This is not about UNIX code in Windows. <-- Repeat until it goes in.
I'm feeling generous. Here's another one.
This is about a desperate, dying company - SCO - and a not at all desperate or dying one - Microsoft - who, for the time being, have a common agenda.

Help the clueless here, what is their common agenda?
To knock IBM and Linux down a peg? Is Microsoft licensing SCO code just to give SCO the money to stay in business long enough to finish their lawsuit?

To Serve Linux...
...as in Twilight Zone cookbook type of "Serving". :-)
MS makes a cheap investment supporting a company that is very much antagonistic to Linux. SCO wants to gain legitimacy for it's claim that unix is their IP - as in lookey here judge, we got the most pervasive company in the world paying their Unix dues, why won't these others recognize the same?
IOW, it's a legal ploy. MS doesn't really give a dang whether they're street legal. They just want to cause grief for all the Linux vendors that don't pay the SCO lawyer tax. SCO just wants their mafia mobney from every Unix in distribution.

And they *still* spout this crap
But if you say to people, 'Do you understand the GPL?' And they'll say, 'Huh?' And they're pretty stunned when the Pac-Man-like nature of it is described to them. Someone explain to me how he can get away with using "people" in the above sentence when he really means "commercial developers". Sorry, complete tangent to the point of the article. Just bugs me.

I'll tell you one thing.
If I wasn't sure about shuttering my own shingle, I am now. This fscking industry deserves Micro$loth. If the general public is stupid enough to buy anything out of Redmond after all of this, they deserve it. I am now heartened that I have chosen to disappear into a cubicle rather than try to light a candle in the darkness.
Christ, I am more proud than ever that my daughter listed "Computer Applications" as dead last on her preferences for school classes. This industry sucks absolutely and absolutely sucks.
bcnu, Mikem
The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.
