These people in the area might be the ones to align with.

a little translation about the soviet war starting and the taliban

I cannot vouch for this site but sounds somewhat like what I know. The translation sounds a tad dodgy as the syntax of profanity is quite wrong to my ears, it may be an attempt to clean it up.
knowledge is power, but underestimating their resolve may be a assbiter,

Select the period from 1747-1978 - gives a brief summary of major events incl massive British loss in mid 1800s.

Also from the initial page, read the article about how Russia'a failed invasion of Afghanistan contributed to the collapse of USSR.

***********

In 1839, the British invaded Afghanistan and occupied the capital, Kabul. In January 1842, out of 16,500 soldiers (and 12,000 dependents) only one survivor, of mixed British-Indian garrison, reaching the fort in Jalalabad, on a stumbling pony. Fearing another Russian influence, the British once again entered Afghanistan in 1878. In July 1880 the regiment was cut to ribbons, while 'Abd al-Rahman Khan became Amir of Afghanistan, but agreed to surrender Afghan foreign relations to the British. In 1919 (Third and last Anglo-Afghan War), under Amanullah Khan, Afghanistan reclaimed its foreign independence from the British, who were never to interfere directly into Afghan affairs again.

Sober reading.

Cheers

New 1838...
... had a distinct lack of air power.

I don't think you'll see regiments blindly entering mountain passes and being cut to ribbons like the British.

The Soviet invasion is more to the point, I think.

New Re: 1838...

The lesson to be learned is the fanatical way these people fight & the other lesson is that even the mightiest should never be so arrogant as to believe they can succeed where everyone else failed. Not saying this has happened yet but many people outside US consider that the real problem with the Somalia ops was exactly that.

Cheers

Doug

New The soviet invasion, but with key differences
To our good, the Soviets were fighting a war of occupation and were constantly hampered by the fact that they were facing a foe funded by the West, and Russian men who lost sight of the roads and landmarks they knew were in serious danger of not finding their way back. We are not facing a foe funded by a superpower, we do not care about occupying land, and today we have GPS.

To our bad we are facing a foe whose idea of victory is managing to get enough support in other Muslim countries to turn this into a broader war...

Cheers,
Ben

You do sort of wonder whether he was poisoned.

And what might have happened if he'd lived.

New Ghengis Kahn did it better
OK, he took a little longer. But started from a smaller power base and conquered more.

New Yabut its aims are so tawdry:
At least the blurb gives impression it's about -

Teaching a new class of wet-behind-ears MBAs how to behave just like Billy n'Bally (who also motivate the kids they kidnap fresh from schools, instill M$-valuez, train an effective marketing/lying group and .. oh you know)

So it seems to be YAN Bizness as Guerrilla Warfare / Grow the Horde kinda manual.

Sheesh - this is a 'life' ??

Cheers,

Ashton
New Umm... where have I heard that before?
From [link|http://www.mercatormag.com/303_khan.html|the article] Ben linked:
The shocked Europeans were left to pray, "From the fury of the Tartars, oh Lord deliver us."
That used to go, "A furore Normannorum libera nos, Domine", IIRC.
