I have one too - but . .
. . it got some sort of crud in it a couple weeks ago that makes it impossible to fetch mail, even by direct login. It's just an emergency dial-up access account and has received only spam mail for 6 years or so, so I don't really care much.

POP-3 protocol
telnet popd.ix.netcom.com 110 \r\n\r\n "list" will show a list of messages. "retr" will fetch them. Run this manually to get the messages you can get from the list. Flush. \r\n\r\n "dele number" will delete the offending item number. \r\n\r\n Full command set is in the [link|http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1939.txt|Post Office Protocol - Version 3, RFC 1939]. \r\n --\r\n

Yes, but 'list' errors out
My email reader, PMMail, has a direct telnet mode, but that doesn't help. The server returns an error on list.
This happened once before, but it only lasted a few days, so someone must have fixed something. This time it's been a couple of weeks.

That sounds like a problem elsewhere...
...possibly filesystem (or POP server) level. Doesn't sound like\r\nit's worth it to you, but I'd drop a line to tech support if I\r\ncared. \r\n --\r\n
