New Let GNU 'date' do your date arithmetic
Try this:

date --date yesterday

Edit starts here:

Sorry, I should have been more complete with the command.

date --date yesterday "+%Y-%m-%d"

The capital 'Y' in the format gives you YYYY instead of YY.

New Figgered it out
I check right after I get the day and month. If the first character is '0', then I remove it, with a bash "substring" ie. ${ var: offset: length }.

GNU was going to be a problem because we don't have gcc installed on the machine, and the only distributions of date I could find were source code in shellutils. The latest date I found was 1994. Either this code is really stable, or there's a new "package"?

I tried looking in coreutils, but there wasn't anything in the ftp directory.

Anyhow, it's fixed. I know I have a leap year problem, too, but I've got 11 1/2 months to fix that. I'll put it in the tickler for next January.

(And there are a ton of other things to do...)

New Sorry About That
I assumed from the forum title that you're running this on a Linux system with GNU date already on it.

New Solaris
But, nobody's posted to the Unix forum in a month, so I figured I would get better coverage here.

New You really want to live in hick East Texas?
We are hiring for a Unix Admin, send me a resume at gdaustin "at" attbi "dot" com.

However, I will pre-warn you that it's not a great place to work, the owner is unpredictable, and we interviewed a strong sys-admin candidate last week.

We're bringing him in for another round next week, and if the owner likes him, we'll probably hire, because he's local.

Visit our website at www "dot" omnisys-inc "dot" com or www "dot" careclaim "dot" com.

(I guess we're doing this so scanners don't pick up the addresses? Do I need to put aluminum foil on my head, too?)
New Duh
You already have it on your web page.

However, I need it in MS Word format for the HR zombies.
New email sent, thanx

They aren't zombies, they are just resting.

New My scripting is that bad huh?
Actually 3 of us share admin responsibilities:

I handle more of the DBA stuff, system installs and patches, and DB2.

Another guy handles hardware and storage, some installs, and networking.

And a 3rd guy handles test systems, some scripting, and BEA Web Logic.

New your scripting is fine, just sensed a need for someone
else to do it.
thanx,
bill
