New Windows 2000 Issues
My W2K Server was working fine, I didn't really do anything to it recently but it has started having problems.

Sometimes it locks up after not being used for a while, like a day or two. No screensaver, but the desktop is there with the mouse icon, but all is frozen and won't move the mouse.

Also the other workstation cannot see the W2K Server and vica-versa. I used a second hard drive and installed Windows 95, 98SE, and ME and the server computer with 95/98SE/ME could see the workstation. So I know the network stuff is working properly.

Internet access is DSL, via a DLink Hardware Router. The W2K Server can access the Internet, but cannot see the Workstation.

Any ideas? I'm fresh out of them and at my wit's end. I'm ready to back up the Data Files and then do a RRR if all else fails.

Anything in the system error log?

This kind of behaviour *tends* to point at hardware - is the memory known to be good in another box, for example?

Without access to the boxen in question, troubleshooting is difficult, as you might imagine.

But in this instance I would definitely start with the hardware, then start unplugging peripherals.

New What it could be
I got a Cooler Master AMD Althon Fan, my brother tells me that he had problems with Cooler Master Fans that went away after he replaced the fan. Just booting the system into CMOS Setup "PC Health" it showed 114F within a few minutes. The Overheating could cause the lockups, right?

Now as to the network issues, I have no clue what went wrong with those.

Could be, 114F is very warm...

Overheating could cause all sorts of strange problems.

I don't know who thought this up, but it certainly wasn't a bird.
