Germany's jobless rate climbed to 11 percent in January, leaving a record 4.62 million people jobless, the country's federal labor office said Wednesday.
goes much higher or much longer the goosesteppers will be at it again. Prime cause of the last little putz was massive unemployment.

New I wonder if they count Unemployment the way we do, or maybe
they're honest about it. I mean, do they also have "discouraged workers" who don't count? I don't remember exactly when this happened, I think under Reagan or Bush I, but I recall the rules about the unemployment figure changing. Under the old rules, there were no "discouraged workers" and the people in the military were excluded from the computation. New rules: you stay unemployed long enough and you become "discouraged" and don't count, and now everyone in the military is counted as "employed". Pushes our "real" unemployment number down.
New people who expend their unemployment are not counted
Yes the real rate is different from the published. In Germany I wonder if the auslanders are counted as employed doin the menial tasks push the actual number of Germans unemployed even higher. In the east the rate is hovering at 20%. Perhaps Conrad could help out here what those figures mean in the current economic conditions.

A number of policies were introduced which caused the unemployment figures to drop.
Women were no longer included in the statistics so any women who remained out of work under the Nazi\ufffds rule did not exist as far as the statistics were concerned.
The unemployed were given a very simple choice: do whatever work is given to you by the government or be classed as "work-shy" and put in a concentration camp.

New It's a consequence of the expanding EU.
Factories and job are moving to countries East of Germany. When the social contract is onerous and there are employer options to cut expenses, the result can be foretold. You may recall NAFTA and Ross Perot's mention of the "great sucking sound". Different place, same thing.

Yep, it's a worrisome thing.
