Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Pretty soon we'll be reading about . .
. . yet another Microsoft internal memo describing how badly this new pitch has flopped. Nobody's going to believe this line.

I replaced a bunch of NetWare servers with Linux / Samba for Y2K because it cost a lot less and current NetWare wouldn't run on their old servers anyway. They all have a Samba share named SYS, to eliminate client configuration issues.

Since then, I've had clients actually forget they even had a server. Matter of fact, I can't even remember where some of them are.

New If configured correctly
they won't even notice the differece between having a Linux/SAMBA server or a NT/2000 Server, their mapped network drives will map the same, and so will their network printers. To the user, it might as well be a Netware or Windows NT/2000 Server.

In 1995-1997 we showed our clients two server confitations, one with NT Server and the other with Linux and SAMBA. The price difference was $1000USD and NT was limited to 5 users, maybe 10 if they got a special deal with an OEM, but Linux and SAMBA was unlimited. Guess which one they chose? Uh huh, the Linux one!

New I can only use a Linux server about half the time.
I serve small business clients, and many small businesses depend on one key management application, that would be too expensive to change even if the replacement were free (which is unlikely).

In many cases, that application is Client Server, and based on an engine that is not available for Linux, or the publisher simply won't support it on Linux even thought the engine is available and works fine. Even with some regular LAN applications that don't care, tech support will hang up on you if they hear you have a Linux server on your network. Since all these managment applications include numerous "quirks", tech support is needed.

Just a week ago I got lambasted by an Act! consultant about how "Bill Gates won the war". By time I got to the site, he'd already gotten info about "unsupported" Samba config from Symantecs tech articles (Opportunistic Locking must be turned off for Win98, NT, 2000, and Samba). The immediate problem was just permissions which I fixed in a few minutes and he left happy with a copy of my smb.conf.

I go through this "unsupported" crap all the time, but it's slowly drifting to "We only support Red Hat". Same cop-out, different phrase.

New There you have it....
We have a Winna!

We now know *WHY* I support RedHat 6.2 through 8.0, and all of it's lovely "RPM" dependancies stuff.

I would truly love to support more than one distro... but ya know...
