New Could be a PNG issue
Some browsers (guess which?), while they support PNG, don't properly handle PNG transparency. You'll see a slight darkening of the underlying color, so it would look like the effect you're describing.

I was booted under windows, I'll check under Linux tonight.

Odd thing about the video drivers for my laptop, OS/2 lets me use 24bit color but both Windows and Linux limit the 1400x1050 display to 16bit.
