The first national flag was hard to distinguish from Old Glory on the battlefield, so Confederate general PGT Beauregard designed the well-known battle flag to be carried by individual regiments. The second national flag featured the battle flag inset on a field of all white, but this was considered to look too much like a surrender flag - finally the vertical red bar was added.
