New Mainframe or '400?
If it's the '400, system commands are easy. They are made up of uther subwords (wrk=wrk with - dsp=display etc) - and everything is on a menu and has attached help.

RPG can be hard to read - it's positional, and has some bad things, like the ability to conditionally execute individual lines of code based on (boolean) numeric stats indicators... IMO, these indicators should only be used to cycle states - orthwise the booleans they represent should be used in 'if' or 'do' type statements. I digress, though.

  • Even though everyone is out to get you, it doesn't matter unless you let them win.
New hokay is there a book by chance?
stuff I looked at looked really simple, batched if/then gotos. Looked no different from biz basic or pick or cobol. RPG translatable/compatible with the foregoing?
thanx,
bill

New least expensive route....
The latest info can be found/downloaded:

[link|http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/html/as400/|AS400 Online Library]
[link|http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/|IBM Redbook Site]

They offer online HTML/PDF versions or you can download 'em. Or, you
can order the dead tree variety for a fee.

Cheers,

New CL scripting, perhaps, or REXX?
When writing scripts in the PDM editor, you can prompt commands (F4), too...

New WDSC for iSeries
When you get a chance, check out WebSphere Development Studio Client for iSeries. You can design, code, debug, deploy to iSeries while not using the green screen tools anymore. The new tools are MUCH better -- particularly on the debugging side. Also, you can do legacy -- RPG, CL, etc -- with the same tools you can use to build C/C++, Java, Web Services, etc. You get remote prompting (F4) too. All in all a pretty slick set of tools.

Also, in the same toolbox is something called the WebFacing tool. It does a good job of morphing green screen apps to browser -- still running the code on the AS400 -- uses Apache and WebSphere app server on the IFS under the covers to do so.
New Oooh - no more WSG!
Though WSG was a great 'stupid AS/400 trick' to show management...

I'll check it out when I get the chance... I'm 'between contracts' at the moment though...

New Two books I'd recommend
If you're familiar with Unix, then you can apply this book in the inverse sense: MVS & UNIX: A survival Handbook for Multi-Platform Users, Developers, and Managers, Richard J. Bambara, McGraw Hill, 1998, ISBN 0070066639 [link|http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=62-0070066639|Powells]. Covers issues from hardware architecture to editors & environments.

For general JCL: System 390 JCL, Fourth Edition, Gary DeWard Brown, Wiley, 1998, ISBN 0471283096 [link|http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=65-0471283096-1|Powells]. An updated release may be available.

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
[link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/|TWikIWETHEY] -- an experiment in collective intelligence. Stupidity. Whatever.
