I've never missed two years in a row (and I've been going since '82) - and I really feel the need to beat people up with sticks about now. Post #48,291 by imric 8/5/02 10:31:58 PM Reply	Steel armor, usually A 12-gauge stainless cuirass with a scaled backpiece, 14-guage mild-steel full legs (I have knee problems - they were custom designed to fit ove my brace), with leather bits and pieces. Normally I'm a sword and board man, but I love the GS - it's too limited for the War, though (read: I'm not good enough with it and I prefer to give more than I get when I'm there...). But for the War, I 'cheat' and wear a plastic suit. Too much running around for an old man like me, otherwise... I was but a bystander at the time, though (member of SCA in good standing, but not authorized in any weapons). The field battle and some of the others were a lot of fun to watch, though. My fiancee and I plan to go year after next, I think. "Mad Tony" runs it, in case anyone wonders what happened to him. Mad Tony plans to move his gaming store to Lingbergh and open up a computer store in November, he talked about hiring me. Rattan is solid - we use it instead of other woods because it's resistant to splintering and breakage. Add to the rattan the weight of thrusting tips, tape, cross (or basket) hilts and you can think a sword as being about the size and weight of a softball bat. Without armor, these weapons are literally deadly. WITH armor, it's not unusual to accumulate some nasty bruises. It's not as bad as it sounds, though. It is truly one of the most fun activities I've yet encountered... And it IS an excellent way to work out agression!
