Problem answered: it works.

My newly acquired DSL modem is happily connected to the PPPOE software via my 10/100 switch as I described and everything is sweet. I just have to use the uplink port or find a cross-over cable. :-)

Edit: And the bandwidth is intoxicating! 256K all to myself. (-:
