Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Can anyone ID "Juno" ?
Trying this from afar with a newbie.

This seems to be a one-size fits all, wherein there's a menu for mail, maybe browsing. She thinks.. it's a M$-browser. CD likely sent out by her ISP. But *something* runs as a task 'Juno' -- and has begun crashing.

She groks the 3-finger to kill tasks; is about to grok also: next.. reboot just because. Anyone have experience with such a Thing?

Thanx

It sounds to me as if she has installed Juno's web/email client and it is conflicting with something else that the ISP has installed.

Ask her if she is using Juno for anything, if not, have her uninstall it. Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, etc. If she is using Juno, have her call up Juno and see what can be done to avoid the conflict. They might want her to uninstall it and then reinstall it.

Juno has built in Email and Web via its Interface and runs a rotating Banner Ad during Access that cannot be closed duing connection, unless one pays to remvoe it. I am guessing that the banner is the one that is crashing the system? It takes some time loading and when it has a conflict with other software, it can crash the system unless it is killed via Control-Alt-Delete. Obviously something is causing a conflict.

New A good start
Aha.. a predatory banner ad to subsidize the 'free' -whatever-. Now I can quiz a bit more usefully.

I've paid 0 attention to these alternates to pay n'play. Now I have to. Then too, have you any idea about the format of Juno's mail? If she can't accommodate the present setup and went with a local ISP and [mozilla, say] - I expect she'd want to drag the mail along.. dunno how that might or might not 'convert'.

Meanwhile I'll get some more info.

Many thanks,

Ashton
New Juno Mail
I don't know of any conversion programs, Juno's email file format is a bit cryptic. Best way to save the mail is to forward the important ones to a different email account. Juno forces you to use their own Email interface, or a web Interface from their juno.com website.

have her run MSCONFIG from the start menu and then disable some of the startup items and see if that makes a difference. Windows 98 has this, just have her hit the Start menu, and choose the Run command and then enter MSCONFIG into the text box and hit run. Then get to the Startup tab and have her read off the ones that are checked. Or better yet, have her disable all of them except for Scan Registry, Systray, and whatever AntiVirus software she is using. If she uses a Winmodem, be sure to keep that one checked as well. Keep the "Juno*" ones checked if they are there. See if this solves the problem.

New Good thought..
She's at least responding well to sequential questions - seems problems developed when J. sent her some 'upgrade'.. Think it's time for her to get a real ISP and trash this trashy outfit.

Will pass on the mail-save idea - it has the advantage of being about bulletproof.

{sigh}

The ad-lingo on Juno site is just too reminiscent of the ad crap I received from Earthlink (which bought up my previous ISP) before I bailed: reams and reams of cutesy-toy crap - but if you wanted them to fix a tech problem, 7 different #s, none of them talking to the others.

Even when I narrowed the problem to a fscked "mail-alias lookup table" in So-Cal - they couldn't just Fix It - for 4 more days; I finally got to a Sr. Manager a mere 50 miles away and offered to drive up to Sacramento and edit this *&^$% table myself. 2 hrs. later my mail was restored. At a mere $50/hr: they still owe me ~$300 IMhO.

I expect this to be the story for millions soon - when there are only 3 ISPs left. Corp-Am Medicine - why not Everything.

Gracias,

Ashton
New Adding to what Ashton said
Running something like ad-aware may reveal surreptuous applications that could very well be interfering with Juno's ad, also. Download that - if you can't get that far on *that* computer, it's easy enough to transfer using your basic sneaker-net. :-)

New Thanks - I'm suggesting she vote with her feet.
