New The first time as tragedy, the second time
…well, pace Marx, also tragedy, albeit with the flavor of slapstick. Who could have predicted that the Republic would slide into outright fascism* on a banana peel? But this is what is happening.

After the 2016 election I told friends that what was coming would be worse than we imagined. I will amend that to say that thirty months on things are worse than I imagined would be worse than we imagined.

We are never coming back from this. The norms and institutions of “Constitutional democracy” have been destroyed. The GOP is a nakedly authoritarian, fascist* party that will rule as despots on behalf of the plutocrats in power, and make the country ungovernable during such periods, should these ever arise, in which it finds itself in opposition. Within another quarter-century, at the outside, seventy percent of the population will be concentrated within fifteen states, with fifteen senators representing them, and thirty percent in the other-thirty-five, with seventy senators: I can’t believe it’s not democracy!

I will assert that things are going to get much worse over the next two years and beyond than we imagine today, and worse again than what we imagine might be worse.

cordially,

*The late Bill Patient (whom I hope would not be a Trumpista had he lived to the present day) took me to task here on more than one occasion back in the day for using the F-word. Godwin himself now has rescinded the “law” that bore his name. I used to worry that we had a nascent fascist movement on our hands. I say “nascent” no more. It’s here.
New will those 15 senators all speak english?
yes our leaders of both parties (Pelosi excepted) are gnats sitting on pimples that reside on midgets sitting on the shoulders of pimps who stare longingly at giants in the mists and mythos of the past. Our country will get over it.

New It's not over yet.
The only way out is through.

We can't give up. Too many people sacrificed too much for us to let them steal our country from us.

Hang in there.

Cheers,
Scott.
New steal YOUR country? Oh you mean this country

good article you linked to by the way

New Re: steal YOUR country? Oh you mean this country
Wow. Where did you dig that up? I don't think I've read something so very slanted in a very, very long time.

Oh, it's from a guy at the Discovery Institute. Yeah, that Discovery Institute. The Creationism cranks.

The mission of Discovery Institute’s Center on Wealth, Poverty, and Morality is to connect the practical truths of economics with the perennial truths of ethics. We are building a sustained and accessible defense of free enterprise, entrepreneurship, and stewardship in the moral categories consonant with most Americans.

Jesus was a white American Capitalist, you see.

Why do you read such tripe? Seriously!

Cheers,
Scott.

New You imagine that you are a bold iconoclast
But you have devolved into a troll. Maybe one in fifty of your posts here is worth reading.

And the two percent suggest that you’re potentially better than that. So why are you generally, day in and day out, such an asshole? Inquiring minds want to know, or at least wonder occasionally.
New "You imagine that you are a bold iconoclast" ah no
your original post I commented on was not in disagreement with you.
however when nother brought up that YOUR country was being stole I responded with a piece that may indicate what a life under progressives may b,e a little facist in its own way. I don't want to see that either.

New What I meant by "our country" was us being Americans.
Not letting a bunch of grifters give it away to Putin and a bunch of Russian oligarchs.

Or Saudi princes.

Or Korean dictators.

Or unreconstructed Confederates.

It's not their country, it's ours. I thought that was reasonably clear, but I guess not.

Why you chose to see it as a Left/Right thing is beyond me. But your immediately turning to an insane, RWNJ publication to try to act as a counterpoint is more than a little disconcerting.

My $0.02.

Cheers,
Scott.

"Or Korean dictators."

"Or unreconstructed Confederates." last I checked Judge Roy Moore was not elected to dog catcher
"It's not their country, it's ours." Seems like you have a very restrictive version of ours, mine seems to be more open

which by itself proves my point, that I do not feel comfortable in a country that will protect certain classes of rapists against all accusations whether presidents, supreme court judges or homeless depending on the political views of the rapist
FUCK you made me miss the ot goal of the 2nd ot period in the blues stars game :-)

New Go back under your bridge.
New not time yet. The bridge is North of st louis in a quiet crossing

He was a regular consumer of World Net Daily, and has become habituated to it. Yeats:

cordially,
New Western Democracy is dying because of Western Capitalism.
The fundamental source of trouble in the world is still religion, but another powerful source is the fact that Capitalism's requirement that GDP always increases has meant that technological innovation has made about forty per cent of the population redundant. Capitalism demands that the forty per cent becomes eighty in short order.

Fairly soon (if we're not already there) we will have simultaneously achieved a population twice too large and a consumption rate of resources that will make the planet unlivable. It is insufficient to consume less. We must also create less. But that idea is blasphemous in Western Democracies and so they continue their death march. I can't really muster a tear for them.

It's mourning in America again.
New So then.. you don't think that 500 more $3M+ Bugattis should be made?
Of course you Do. As do I.

But the venom has now become part of the 'Murican (and others') DNA. It tastes just 'like' honey.
(Recall those er, Sirens ... purring into Odysseus' ear-pans?)

..we likely haven't enough trees left to make n-masts ..to which a %large of 333M could be tied.
{{sigh}}

moi tries to look on the Bwight-side:
Capitalismo DIES OR All--not just homo-Sap--DIE.

I believe that even our plurality of Innumerates Can.. eventually ... ... (there's the 'hope' part: In? TIME?)
See the import of the imbalance of this equation
(even if--for some--their very first 'Solution'. To any serious Problem evah.)
New A few thousands of those...
...and tens of thousands of three-quarter-million and hundreds of thousands of several-kilobuck ($/€/£, whatever) cars are insignificant. They're ridiculously extravagant, granted, but actually not all that big a deal: They're an actual product, with both practical and residual-monetary value, and the process of manufacturing them makes a living for qualified workers and engineers; it's not as if it were on the same level of conspicuous consumption as "sinking". (Sure, those workers and engineers could be "more gainfully" employed making VW Golfs and Skoda CitiGos -- but lots of their colleagues already are; there's no shortage of Golfs and CitiGos.)

And in the final analysis, these cars are a minuscule part of the world economy. Yeah, yeah, a striking symbol of "all that is wrong with the economy today", sure; go on using it for all I care -- as long as you remember that as a symbol, it's more striking than actually fitting.

Same old username (as above), but now on iki.fi

(Yeah, yeah, it redirects to the same old GMail... But just in case I ever want to change.)
New It's ever hard/or impossible? to "make a change-in-Scale" ... happen.
Agreed that %-wise the Veyrons are a pittance, but there are 10000x as many other Energy-wasting habits, each one of which shall always have its yes-Buts.
Propaganda will be a necessity.. slogans work, be they ever so humble or nonsensical.

Kids Can learn the difference between self-serving Sales ones and those recognizing just how many habits must be transformed, and with no time to screw up;
adults ... already have the bad habits. How/if/when we learn to do this sea-change effectively? is obviously a major ingredient of ... well you know.

Unprecedented IS--or ought to be--a scary word, considering the intransigent who Will-not lift a finger, 'even if it Kills them'. I no Master-solutions either: and we'll need millions of such.
Carrion. We might become that; Will become that if homo-Sap behaves as usually he does.
(Maybe that's candidate for the scariest part? of the ∱eare-mix.).
New Hadn't heard of sinking
It sounds slightly apocryphal, the kind of thing that may have actually happened precisely once and was turned into a "trend" by a reporter. But at the same time sounds just like coal rolling, which has happened to me.

New Is that the break-even price now?
IIRC, VW drivers subsidized the Veyron to the tune of ~2.2M euro/each.
New No research, hearsay that the fastest (~267? mph) Model is close-enough, there.
