New Amazon just ruined Sunday morning
http://www.salon.com...d_sunday_morning/

The U.S. government can't afford to offer decent postal service. But Jeff Bezos can. This is wrong
ANDREW LEONARD

Seems that 'privatization' + homogenization' go together.
But there are side-effects.
While homogenization proceeds apace now, Roger Price had its number way-back (even unto MAD magazine days)
http://en.wikipedia....ger_Price_(comedy)

..when I recall instantly-filing one of his Avoidism quips: If everyone doesn't want it--nobody gets it.
(Tried to buy a small vial of Tincture of Iodine U.S.P. lately? For 'reasons'--no pharmacist yet interrogated is willing to fashion an answer to 'Why??'--it''s not available.)

But never mind the averaged-out matters about our infinite craving for More Stuff; it's homogenized-minds who are the handmaidens of our denouement.
New A couple of Nits.
First, isn't it quite obvious that the government can't afford anything? We are, after all, the world's leading debtor nation. Ronnie Rayguns did that to us. And by blindly following his policies (yes, even through democratic admins) we continue to dig ourselves in further. It should be noted that these economic policies have been to the exclusive benefit of people like Bezos. One could take a little heart then, in the knowledge that he'll at least be required to spend a little on public servants - something NO ONE in his economic class has had to do for almost 35 years.

Second, Sunday was always a day of rest? Try telling that to healthcare workers, firemen, policemen, soldiers, etc. Not everyone got or has a job with week-ends off.
New The sooner Sunday stops being a day of rest, the better.
I got shit to do at the weekends, and everything being closed doesn't help that.
New Everything being closed?
I'm trying to think of something besides government functions that's closed on Sundays around here.
New But, try to get an alcoholic beverage in the Carolinas.
Even when the stores themselves are open.

Damned Taliban! :)
Alex
New What?
It's been a long time since I lived there, but I thought you could buy beer and wine after 1:00pm on Sundays (I think that was the time). But, hard liquor you couldn't get because the ABC stores were closed.

Edit: BTW, you can purchase NO ALCOHOL in Indiana on Sunday. Unless, of course, you go to a restaurant that makes at least 51% of their income, on average, from food sales. Then, you can buy any alcoholic beverage your heart desires (beer, wine, whiskey, etc.)

New in Durham you can buy beer and wine after 1pm on Sunday?
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 58 years. meep
New Beer and wine sold after Sunday noon in NC.
No alcoholic beverage sold from midnight Saturday till 7 am Monday in SC. But, it is apparently a county by county deal so a fraction of the counties do allow Sunday sales. Lancaster county where I live is not one of them.
