Welcome to IWETHEY!

New the reason is that pcb's are everywhere
the seals eat the fish and concetrate the PCB;s in their fat and that is the main diet of killer whales. You will see similar levels in Polar Bears. I think this is a chemical we will have to mutate to handle because it is so pervasive.
thanx,

TAM ARIS QUAM ARMIPOTENS
New So after PCBs -- we gets MTBE. (learn fast)
The fools gave the choice to gasoline refiners: pick ethanol or MTBE. Apparently the MTBE was cheaper EXCEPT - - it is water soluble <<<

Think... hundreds of really leaky storage tanks; thousands of sorta leaky: Would any chemist have missed the significance of putting a $@#&% water-soluble substance (with its own still to be evaluated health consequences) in something as ubiquitous as cars / gas stations? Any non brain-damaged chemist, that is.

In CA it's gotten into wells, forced expensive new testing, etc. May not be phased out til '04 now, though Philips says it'll try by '03. Could the PCBs re a major cause of the creeping dumbth like this?

(And leading to Bore / Gush choices)

Mutate indeed - Planet of the Apods.

New Only one way to find out.
Could the PCBs re a major cause of the creeping dumbth like this?
Raise a couple of generations of vegetarians in bio-domes using recycled water. Or, maybe more than a couple. Seems PCB's can be passed from mommy to baby via breast feeding.

New Good summary article, however devastating..
I hadn't realized that the bio- approach worked adequately (??) for rivers - 'course with 0.7 MEGAtons of the stuff extant, the sheer volume of the oceans, the billions whose food comes from same...

Toss into the mix the perpetual "Conservative" view that planetary maintenence is a frill which is optional, fun to ridicule AND inconsistent with the perfecting of the employee-less automated Lean / Mean Corporation. Stir in.. the accelerating wealth-concentration among a small group (whose allegiance is to no social group on the planet except their immediate own). Bake this in the microwave a while. So then:

By the time your suggested experiment might yield results - (and IF... PCBs just happened to be: the single most likely cause of the creeping dumbth ??) ... would there be many left outside the bubble, capable of assimilating this new-found confirmation?

(If you could reach a "middle-manager", that is - crawling along at 4 mph in the 24'-long 9'-high 9000# Navigator Raptor-IV on the 'free'way - via his/her implanted cell-fone chip, and distracted by planning for a noon PowerPoint presentation re increasing the out-sourcing to Bangladesh ...)

a homo-sap's continuing genetic line is not..
..a foregone conclusion.
Best we enjoy the moments yet available - no?
New Alcohol...
...and water are infinitely miscable. That is, they are mutually soluble in any proportion.

Solubility isn't the problem, toxcicity is. While consumption-grade quantities (eg: 1%+) of some alcohols are toxic, the quantities which might be introduced to groundwater via normal vectors from fuel stations and vehicles are not.

New Well yes.. but that last is the Important difference, no?
Besides, a tiny bit of ethanol in the water supply.. might just possibly loosen up a few anal retentives in that Land of unintended consequences. Couldn't hoit -
