Prepare to get your hate on.
Well, it's new computer time.
But I'm not getting another Mac.
To get a 27" display with a graphics card worth two shits puts the cost over £2,000.
I want that - oh, I want that.
But I can't afford it right now, and I need some more graphical oomph for photo stuffs; I was processing some big stitched RAWs recently and the 512MB Radeon 4850 in the iMac was veritably juddering along scrolling these multi-gigabyte images around.
So it's back to the dark PC side for me.
3.2GHz Ivy Bridge i5 with a 2GB Nvidia 660GTX and a box to put it in (and some other stuff like a motherboard, memory and a disk), along with a 27" AOC IPS monitor (although only 1080p) for £800.
And it'll run Windows 8.

>psst, wanna buy an imac?<

Yes.
Faster/better/stronger than 7.
Start screen is a non-issue. Press start button, type words, find things. Exactly the same as 7, only less squinty.
Metro is a non-issue. Don't like Metro? Don't use it.
Desktop is better in all aspects.
And it runs my games and apps, which is nice.

I guess that's why they're changing it with 8.1, eh? ;-)

There may be a button.
You will click it.
You will go to the start screen.
8.1 will not take away my start screen.

made that decision a while back
needed a lapper when my beloved macbook got whisked away
$900 new macbook
$348 17inch lapper with eye candy and winders
winders it is. Told myself after 3 blue screens its a linux box. 2 years later it's still winders but winders 8.
I live with it

Obligatory response
Do what ever floats your boat.
I'm actually having a hard time finding a decent Laptop that'll run Linux that doesn't cost £2,000 or more.
Harumph.
One thing I WANT it to support is something like this:
http://www.newegg.co...m=N82E16824176251
Plus another USB3 external monitor or 3.

Laptop's off the agenda
I need a massive screen for photostuffs.
Whilst I'm sure you can get a 1080p laptop, I have doubts about the portability of said beast with a 27" LCD.
Things have changed since I last bought a PC.
HDMI for video! How weird is that?! What happened to DVI? Did no-one love it enough?
ETA: Is that an IPS panel? I don't think I can live without that these days.
ETA2: Am I reading that right? Nothing but analogue VGA input?

It's a TN.
HP seems to make a lot of weird design decisions on some of their consumer hardware. :-/
I'm running dual 21" Samsung (1900x1200) monitors off my Dell E6400 notebook (with a docking station). They're TN but good enough for the work I do. The graphics chip in the E6400 can overheat doing this, or at least it did until I stuck a CoolerMaster laptop cooler under it. Later machines may not have this issue.
I'd strongly recommend a not dismissing a decent 15" laptop with a crappy screen, a docking station, then you can get the monitors you want. Speed, quiet, low power consumption, the opportunity for portability. The docking station makes it easier to add external storage, too.
Have fun.
Cheers,
Scott.
(Who got one of these a few weeks ago, but I haven't tried to use it as a monitor - http://www.amazon.co...ps&condition=used It was used but "like new" so the price was great and it still had the original packing (though in a different box). 42" might be a bit big as a computer monitor though. ;-) The picture is great in HD, OK in SD.)

Portability is not a consideration
Graphics performance is.
To get fast graphics in a notebook makes things go spendy.

Its a Docking Station...
With only 1 USB3 cable tween it and the laptop, to take care of Power (if the laptop can do it), Network, Display, other USB (webcam), Audio, and additional USB ports.
In other words, plug a single USB cable in form the monitor and its set.
Alternatively you can hookup via a VGA connection.
And yes its an TN, not an IPS. But of course you are looking at the screen at oblique angels... oh well.
Cheers.

IPS has better blacks and truer colour
Not everyone cares about that, of course.

A lot of that comes from...
the backlight though.
But yes, Black is not a TN-matrix best foot forward.

I have it.
It is fast.
I can play Borderlands 2 at 1080p with everything dialled round to 11.
Ditto The Witcher 2.
Happy times!
I haven't installed LR or PSE yet, but I have high hopes.

you spent how much and it only has 1080p?

The monitor was 200 quid.
Going to decent (i.e. IPS, LED) 2560x1440 costs serious cash prize monies.
Also, driving modern games at 2560x1440 would require another graphics card.
Maybe later.

>internetfacepunch<
But definitely need MOAR PICKSULS.
OTOH, for a couple of hundred, this AOC monitor is pretty good. Unobtrusive design, decent colour, good blacks. Yeah, it's got a bit of light bleed at the edges, and yeah, it's not going to survive the nuclear holocaust, but it'll more than suffice for the time being.
