Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Laptop's off the agenda
I need a massive screen for photostuffs.

Whilst I'm sure you can get a 1080p laptop, I have doubts about the portability of said beast with a 27" LCD.

Things have changed since I last bought a PC.

HDMI for video! How weird is that?! What happened to DVI? Did no-one love it enough?

ETA: Is that an IPS panel? I don't think I can live without that these days.
ETA2: Am I reading that right? Nothing but analogue VGA input?

New It's a TN.
HP seems to make a lot of weird design decisions on some of their consumer hardware. :-/

I'm running dual 21" Samsung (1900x1200) monitors off my Dell E6400 notebook (with a docking station). They're TN but good enough for the work I do. The graphics chip in the E6400 can overheat doing this, or at least it did until I stuck a CoolerMaster laptop cooler under it. Later machines may not have this issue.

I'd strongly recommend a not dismissing a decent 15" laptop with a crappy screen, a docking station, then you can get the monitors you want. Speed, quiet, low power consumption, the opportunity for portability. The docking station makes it easier to add external storage, too.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who got one of these a few weeks ago, but I haven't tried to use it as a monitor - http://www.amazon.co...ps&condition=used It was used but "like new" so the price was great and it still had the original packing (though in a different box). 42" might be a bit big as a computer monitor though. ;-) The picture is great in HD, OK in SD.)
New Portability is not a consideration
Graphics performance is.

To get fast graphics in a notebook makes things go spendy.
New True enough. Good luck.
New Its a Docking Station...
With only 1 USB3 cable tween it and the laptop, to take care of Power (if the laptop can do it), Network, Display, other USB (webcam), Audio, and additional USB ports.

In other words, plug a single USB cable in form the monitor and its set.

Alternatively you can hookup via a VGA connection.

And yes its an TN, not an IPS. But of course you are looking at the screen at oblique angels... oh well.

Cheers.

New IPS has better blacks and truer colour
Not everyone cares about that, of course.
New A lot of that comes from...
the backlight though.

But yes, Black is not a TN-matrix best foot forward.
