It's hard to imagine he didn't set a new record for longest horizontal displacement from the jump point.

Dunno. There are lots of ballon records, etc.
One could imagine lots of reasons why the landing point would have been far from the start even without breaking the fall record.

Jetstream on the way up
At some point, the balloon was going east at ~120 mph. Later on it picked up westerly winds at about 20 mph.
