The Bible has a copyright?
hmm, I'm up in Austin for a couple days and last night I noticed that The Bible had a copyright. How could man put a copyright on "The Word Of God"?

Most new translations have copyrights
Bibles that they put teams of scholars on to provide the latest and greatest translation pretty much have to be copywritten, otherwise some publisher somewhere could lift it and sell their own "authoritative" versions.
Something like the King James bible, sure, that can't be copywritten. (Perhaps any introductory comments might be, but the text itself can't.)
Famous last RPG quotes: "I'll just shoot this fireball down the dungeon passageway..."

Not if you believe in literalism
If (as many denominations teach) the written text is the literal Word of God, then how can you place a copyright on it? If, however, the printed text represents the (copyright-able) work product of the translators, then wouldn't you have to admit that the text is the word of them?

If someone is that literal
They need to learn the original Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek and read from the source documents.

Yes indeed
The bible was inspired by God, and written down by his people. The Old testiment is based on the Torah, and the New Testiment was written by the followers of Jesus. Not so much the word of God, but words about God and his teacings. Sort of like if I taught a class, and then someone wrote a book on what I was teaching, but in Greek or Chinese. Sometimes the words change, or they get rewritten in another language. The bible has many anonymous authors. But the Ten Commandments and other things were written by God and then copied by Moses, or some other holy person.
I am free now, to choose my own destiny.

A necessary evil.
It is, as others have posted, to protect the investment in translation and publishing. Nothing more. Newer translations even spell out what copying is acceptable without seeking permission.
