You just wouldn't necessarily know it. They're the sort of things sold as part of a platform where one part is tablet device running custom software.
Example: When you pick up a parcel at an Australia Post office that needs your signature, you don't squiggle in a book anymore. Instead, there is a PDA-ish device with a touch-screen, stylus, bar-code scanner and a dock. The agent goes tap-tap, scans the barcode, taps a bit more, then hands it to you to sign the screen with a stylus. It's running a not very recent version of Windows Mobile with a custom app.
