New Is that even legal?
Today, going up La Tuna Canyon, I saw three bicyclists wearing regular cloths instead of the regulation multi-logo emblazoned spandex silly suits.

What is this country coming to when enforcement of conformance to standards has become so lax?

Oh well, maybe they were Mexicans or something.
New define regular
saggy pants, wife beaters, backward hats riding bicycles 3 sizes too small?
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 55 years. meep
New Nope, regular.
Regular shirts, non-baggy (short) pants, shoes and bicycle helmet.

I don't know if the helmets are required by law here, but they might be because they're pretty universal.

Of course there is a self enforcing law. My brother was killed for not wearing his. It's been nearly 4 years and I'm still working on his very messy estate. Lawyer says maybe we can close in June or July.
New :-(
New Sorry to hear about your brother...
...If I had not been wearing a bike helmet last Saturday, it's entirely possible that I would not be here to talk to you (or host this site anymore) today.

I was on a training ride for the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure (for which I am the Vice Chairman this year), and my rear tire slipped out from under me on a wet wooden bridge while I was going along at about 17 mph. I landed on my shoulder, my hip, and my head, in that order. My head slammed the ground pretty damn hard, and I would have AT LEAST ended up with a fractured skull, if not worse.

As it is, I have a broken left thumb and a sprained right shoulder.

I've been riding pretty hard for 12 years and over 6000 miles. This is the first major accident I've had. While I've never before had a personal story to tell about wearing bike helmets, I have always done so. Now I do, and I will (of course) continue wearing the new one I'll purchase once the thumb/shoulder heal.

Sorry about your brother. Seems pretty senseless to not wear a helmet. :(

New Well, he was always more than a little accident prone . . .
. . but thanks for the sentiment.

It was a "door zone" accident, at night, at high speed downhill, reportedly DUI. He never regained consciousness.
New ! Heal quickly.
As a teenager just out of high school I was riding a borrowed old 10-speed racer home from a summer job when I got caught in a downpour. The brakes were useless (chrome steel rims) and I had to turn after going down a small hill. The front wheel caught something and the bike slid out from under me. I was just a little banged up (mostly scraped up pants) - I didn't hit anything but the road. But it made me appreciate how quickly things can go very badly wrong on two wheels.

I'm sorry you were injured, but glad it wasn't worse! Heal quickly!

Cheers,
Scott.

New Gnarly. :-(
New Re: Is that even legal?
Coulda been people who were riding the final stage of the Tour of California, which just finished up a few minutes ago. The 4.5-mile course in downtown LA was open to the public from 8-9:30 this morning.

New Note on the silly suits:
My own silly suit, at least the shorts, comes with a built-in gel pack to protect the gnarlies and thigh bones. They also have a band of some magical substance around the thigh hem that keeps them from riding up into aforementioned gnarlies as well.

The top is a lot more breathable than regular cloth, and it has night reflective strips sewn into it as well.

Mine don't actually have any logos either.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New Yeah, I hear those contrapeions are . . .
, , pretty hard on the 'nads.
New Which contraptions?
The biking shorts, or the bikes themselves?

The bikes themselves, I can understand. The biking shorts make riding longer distances much nicer.
